Roberto Martinez discussion

There were a lot of plus points. It was rather worrying that every time we got a corner they ended up threatening our goal. Every corner of theirs resulted in a period of pressure on us..............
Agree. We have no defensive discipline. Their goal was ridiculous. I find it particularly annoying when Stones goes up seeing that he can't head for toffee.

Perhaps I always will David, and perhaps you'll forever remain embroiled in the throws & the sheer blind ecstasy of your elongated 'bobby-wobble' to ever admit that the current league form is an issue...

Who knows eh.
It's not an issue for me. We cant be expected to get a CL spot so nothing else is good enough. That leaves the cups. The PL is an irrelevancy as long as we stay in it and in reasonable position...itself brought about by good football and the management of meagre resources...which is what this manager is doing.

Lads, You are all going round in circles and not going to agree with each other. Why not wait and see what pans out at the end of the season.

This is the team in 2013/14 - three years ago that Martinez just described as;

It's sorted by total appearances so you can see the number of games that player featured in.

Now, how many have left that played over 10 games? Just Distin?

He's over egging it - the squads average age has gone up. The immense potential we have now, was there in 2013/14 and featured regularly...

Someone's probably already pointed this out, so if I'm repeating stuff already said, then just ignore me.

Three years ago it was January 2013. The 2013/14 season started in August last time I checked and Martinez took over in June 2013.

From your list, he brought in McCarthy, Barry, Lukaku, Deulofeu, Robles, Alcaraz ( Yea, I know ) McGeady ( Yea, I know part 2 ) and Kone.

He's also brought in Besic, Funes Mori, Cleverley and Galloway. None of these were around in Jan 2013.

He's also brought Barkley and Stones fully through into the first team, which would almost certainly have happened regardless of who was in charge, but they were very much on the periphery in January 2013 and Stones was only signed then anyway.

Of our first choice eleven there's still a core from three years ago of Howard, Coleman, Baines and Jagielka, but that's it. Howard and, to a lesser extent Jags are nearing the end of their shelf lives. To say the current team is much the same as it was three years ago is just wrong.

You're missing the point...

The point is, the side listed there from 2013/14 under him finished with our highest ever PL points total.

There's only Distin that isn't here now and so, IMO he's over egging it to suggest ;

That immense talent was there, performing under him when we finished 5th, so they're capable now.

The average age of our starting 11 this season, is higher than the one that finished with our record points tally.

So again. The squad that finished 5th - ordered by appearances;

Not much different to now, is it?!

To be fair, the ones who played then are 2 or 3 years older now. Baines, Howard, etc etc.

Of course.

That's the point...

And so is Barkley, Stones, Lukaku etc - all who featured prominently in 2013/14.

Since finishing 5th, we've pretty much just replaced Distin for Stones (and a record fee for Mori), and the rest of the side have matured.

That's why I'm not having this;

“The reality is that we have taken a very different approach to what we are as a team than we took at this club three years ago. Three years ago it was a very experienced team who knew how to win games but had some sort of ceiling. Now we have gone very young with immense potential to go beyond that ceiling, and there has been investment in that potential so we will get the rewards from it.

Absolute bull crap. The immense potential had key roles/big appearances when we finished 5th and the squads average age has gone UP since.
