Roberto Martinez discussion

Want this manager to win stuff because I like the kind of players he cultivates and the way he wants to play. BUT he needs to start getting results. Tonight was huge, but the away leg is obviously a much bigger ask. He gives us a cup and keeps us up and I think that is enough progress (a change in my position): because it is symbolic and I think symbolism looms large for a great club that has won nothing for 20 years. It's Kendall in 84. He renews our faith and gets another season. Getting ahead of myself, but that was a performance to make you dream...
Those words should never be uttered in reference to the Everton FC my friend as a goal.

In his time at Wigan, Roberto was required to reduce the wage bill by 25%, just as other teams were substantially increasing theirs.

In 2012/13, his modest squad was hit by serious injuries to his central defenders and wingbacks, including Ramis, Caldwell, Alcaraz, Figueroa and Beausejour.

The surprise was not that Wigan were relegated, but that they put up such resistance to it. But they did manage to win the FA Cup.

Spot on, i posted something similar in @GrandOldTeam thread at New Years.

All this "he's had one good season' in the premier league simply isnt true.

Martinez has answered all his critics with our last two performances . I look forward to the scribes waffling eloquently about .....the same crap they have wrote before.

Nothing like a manager and set of players that get the bit between their teeth.Southall was right today on Talksport - first win a cup to show we are winners.

Well the "fans" slating martinez and saying they want him sacked etc suddenly have disappeared based on 2 games...fickle or....?

Hopefully he's learnt from the mistakes of Norwich, Palace, Stoke, Bournemouth etc etc. Yesterday and the Spurs match we seemed to have such better shape and conviction in defense. Boggles the mind if he can get it so wrong in periods of matches but can set up a great game plan like last night. Reminded me of Wolfsburg last season.

Obviously the lack of Howard helped a lot last night as well! lol

Two more victories and he does. Simples. Why's that make an Evertonian lol?

....it's BECAUSE I'm an EVERTONIAN that it makes me laugh TBH mate because it's STILL such a long way off despite everything last night being aces. Hopefully this is RM learning lessons and he won't revert to type for PL games. But, y'know, we'll see...

Genuinely think it's a bit early to talk about 'folklore' & 'history' an' all that jazz.

Despite that I expect DAVE's already put the finishing touches to his statue anyway.

He's the man with the plan.

Some managers just have *it*. Roberto is one of them. He's not arsed about the reputations of Mancini or Pellegrini or Klopp. He just has a plan and if it's carried out he'll do them.

*IT* = the ability to mask under-performance/achievement with the positivity flannel & loony talk? You mean that? Is that the *IT*?

Though gotta give him it for last night. Well done lovely Bob, hope this is the start of the end of the stubbornness...

IF, and it is a big if, Martinez wins a cup here after 20+ years with out one and perennial mediocrity, he goes down in history here.

He's got something about him and I only hope our fans are patient enough to let it shine. Without an Chelsea or City buy out, he is our only hope but he's got a genuine possibility of actually dong the impossible and putting us firmly at the top table again.

Ha Ha Ha. Bizarre. Your point is valid, but you asked me what the major difference was and I gave you that major difference in my opinion. But now you're telling me that my own opinion is wrong.

Ludicrous.

You sound upset, btw. I wonder why? :coffee:

How bizarre that you are changing the time line yet again to shove home your agenda of Howard. Don't believe I did ask you about the "major difference" at all; that would have been you bringing it up.

A point if discussion and taking nothing away from tonights performance.

Considering the way we have shipped goals to the "lower sides" does arl bobby brown shoes set his teams up to dominate them rather than implementing a defensive structure as witnessed tonight and against the spuds

C'mon dave there was a bit more to it than just the keeper. The entire unit in front of him was a lot tighter and compact, hence why Joel was hardly troubled

I know, I said 'big difference', not only difference.

And I'm not upset at all my dear friend; just highlighting your lies again. Keep banging your drums and try and watch the game:coffee:

There are occasions I believe that, yet there are more occasions when I am SO 'meh' about him. If he proves me wrong, BRILLIANT, I'd be the first to hold m'hand up. It just so often seems that - and obviously - he too is on a learning curve, my issue with him is he often seems content to stand still & mule-like on it at times. That said, genuinely hope last night was a step forward because the few minor changes that MOST fans have been crying out for were applied (sort of) and we looked a different side for it...trick is not to go backwards again. Will that happen though?

If Martinez dosen't start Joel on the next league game he has no idea what he is doing. Joel is going to play back to back cup games, we should win them both, then the next game is away at Man City in the league, no better way to get Joel ready for the next leg of the cup then this, he has to do it, no excuses.

100% agree

*99% sure he won't

Pffff.....

The fans weren't asking for those changes so they certainly aren't the fountain of all knowledge.

Barely any fans have been asking for Besic to start. McCarthy, Cleverly, even Barkley or Gibson in the middle have been the shouts I have heard but hardly anyone demanding Besic must be starting, certainly not pre Spurs.

The same Cleverly, everyone has been asking for Mirallas on the left, not Cleverley despite Mirrallas.

Obviously everyone wants Robles, I am sure Martinez probably agrees he should be in but dropping Howard could destroy the fella and mean Robles must work otherwise he has no were to turn. GK's are completely different to other areas and some time you have to just hang in there with your number 1 but I have no doubt come next August, (Hopefully next month) Howard will not even be here. It just takes time or lots of money to get in a suitable replacement.
