Roberto Martinez discussion

City will beat us 3-1 second leg and you'll be back to hating him you knee jerk hypocrites.
That may or may not be true, but if He and the team duplicate last night he's not walking my Blue Mile just yet.
Being Everton though I'm sure will continue to find new and novel ways to mess it up...something to do with away goals in extra time.
Everton that.

Hahaha. It pains me bad when I think of the second leg as I can almost taste Wembley.

I'll never doubt the Catalan again if he pulls this off.

We beat city we play them we lose and stoke will win

we win AND play Stoke then it'll be Astle WBA all over again

We've only been beaten the one time away from home this year, but we've never had to face a trip of this magnitude either.

Odd as it seems to say, with the league fixtures being away to Chelsea and away to City before the return leg, Bobby will have some form of practice in finding the perfect tactical set up for the second leg. I think it could end up benefitting us, and I'm actually rather confident in our ability to at least draw at the Ethiad.

I know, I said 'big difference', not only difference.
As I said before Dave balance. A more solid defense which Joel contributed to and not over committing in attack. Also a special mention for Besic who's no nonsense approach and decisive tackling got the crowd right behind the team

Enigmatic as ever is Roberto.

Just when you think he bunked off all the defense lessons when getting his UEFA training badges he puts a team out that for once was solid, held its shape and defended as a unit not a few talented but disparate individuals.

Selection played a part for sure. Robles looked like he belonged between the posts, not just a stand in and as a result the back four had an "out" when under pressure.

Besic and Barry were superb both in defending the back four but also in setting up attacks.

However what I liked most of all was the sense that everyone knew their role and performed accordingly, something which can only come from the manager and his team.

So the question now is can we do this more regularly rather than can we do it - that's for Martinez to answer.

He was also part of a defence that got relegated because he/they couldn't keep clean sheets.........

I get your point but im sure he was injury prone, 30 years of age and slow. At first I thought he may of been a decent addition but that soon disappeared. Same with Kone too but that has changed a little - still not great but I will give kone a chance if Martinez plays him up top with Lukaku and not as a make shift left winger.

In his time at Wigan, Roberto was required to reduce the wage bill by 25%, just as other teams were substantially increasing theirs.

In 2012/13, his modest squad was hit by serious injuries to his central defenders and wingbacks, including Ramis, Caldwell, Alcaraz, Figueroa and Beausejour.

The surprise was not that Wigan were relegated, but that they put up such resistance to it. But they did manage to win the FA Cup.

It WAS NOT.

You spin your tale as much as you like and see only what you want to see to drive your agenda across

It was the same solid defensive setup as against Spurs, with Howard in goal. They were compact and back behind the ball quickly, pressing when needed but allowing the opposition to have the ball in less dangerous areas. Hence why i brough up my orginal question.

But its ok, you crack on
Ha Ha Ha. Bizarre. Your point is valid, but you asked me what the major difference was and I gave you that major difference in my opinion. But now you're telling me that my own opinion is wrong.

Ludicrous.

You sound upset, btw. I wonder why? :coffee:

True;
Now, by luck or judgement he has stumbled / tweaked a balanced 11 that can still score but not look a total shambles at the back we see the result. stick with it.
For the moment the P45 stays in the desk draw .
yes there will be changes especially Vs Dagenham. But he has found the magic layout for all his round holes, the trick will be NOT to used square replacements, but use the roundest ones we have available...even if they are not the biggest names or wages earners or favourites
As long as he keeps Howard out if the cups - that's the man in thing.

I agree with most of that, but I think he's tailored the team and tactics to suit us for superior opposition who he knows can rip us apart if we go toe to toe.

To be honest, the past two games have been strange in that we're happy to hand control over to the opposition and hunker down a bit. I don't particularly enjoy seeing us do that and I don't think it's RMs preferred way of playing either. We won't face the quality of Spurs and City every week and I expect us to be in a lot more possession and opening up more against middling teams and teams lower down the league. And I think that's right as we out gun these outfits and should go toe to toe with them.

Martinez has answered all his critics with our last two performances . I look forward to the scribes waffling eloquently about .....the same crap they have wrote before.

Nothing like a manager and set of players that get the bit between their teeth.Southall was right today on Talksport - first win a cup to show we are winners.

Want this manager to win stuff because I like the kind of players he cultivates and the way he wants to play. BUT he needs to start getting results. Tonight was huge, but the away leg is obviously a much bigger ask. He gives us a cup and keeps us up and I think that is enough progress (a change in my position): because it is symbolic and I think symbolism looms large for a great club that has won nothing for 20 years. It's Kendall in 84. He renews our faith and gets another season. Getting ahead of myself, but that was a performance to make you dream...

Ain't nothin wrong with dreaming. He has always given me hope. Something I haven't felt in a very long time.
