Roberto Martinez discussion

We don't need to adjust, he does. And he hasn't, injuries may force his hand to change personnel but the system stays constantly.

So the system is to blame for defensive errors? Howard, Jags, Distin have been shocking. McCarthy has been below par also.

Away from injuries, there's the core of the problems.

Leicester and Arsenal - Fitness and concentration.
Palace - Errors.
Chelsea - Well mullered.
RS - Luck
WBA - Win but almost ruined it due to errors.
United - World class players turn up. Keeper has a worldie.

So how do we adjust for defensive errors, without sacrificing the 2 goal a game average?

Last season we executed his brand of football really well and that surprised me with the time element.
This season teams know how to play us and we let them,we don't have a plan b its like he shuts his eyes an does not see it.
Lukaku had one good game against arsenal on the right wing and yet he keeps playing him there for us which does not work.
If you spend 28 million pound on a striker play him there and if he is not trying sort the problem don't close your eyes an stick him on the right wing.
That's not entirely true... You could see his plan B today... Up the tempo don't play around the back and get the ball forward... He manipulates the formation throughout the game.... I agree we haven't been crash hot, but I would say that is mainly due to lacklustre displays from individuals... Think McCarthy earlier in the season and Lukaku today... Lukaku is such a presence, that sometimes it may be better to play him against weaker opposition, and in the case of the Liverpool game, where he is more likely to see more of the ball... I would rather him on the ball slightly out of position than never on the ball in his position... He is more influential than Naismith who is a boss slotted and better through the middle...

The answers lies by rewinding the clock back to last year.

and this my entire argument for this season, it stood out for me against Leicester where there seemed to be a gulf between the 2 holding midfielders and the 2 centre backs.

last year we were a compressed unit, we defended in packs and from the front, as clear as day and especially evident using the game last year at OT. We forced them into making mistakes, regained possession and attacked as one. Fast free flowing football.

This year, and it happened again today, we are allowing the opposition to have the freedom with ball, we are allowing them to turn and face us, last year we made them face their goal by being right at them

take their second today, howard gives possession away, fair enough. When the ball eventually gets switched to di maria ( a good 15 seconds later) we have 8 men behind the ball, 6 in and around the box and not one person bursts out to close him down. He had all the time in the world, yes he scuffed his shot but thats iirrelevant

we are defending a lot deeper and on our 18 yard box which is totally opposite to last year. The top teams are all about pressure, you don't need world class players to close play down

Great point

You have to ask the question why are there so many lacklustre displays though and then address it and hopefully find the problem.
If i was to spend 28 million pound on a striker he would be the first name on the teamsheet in his rightful position and if he has to go out on the wing to get the ball surely we have a big problem.
You are right about today we changed it a bit but we only seem to play when behind.

starting to look like a one trick pony, every game this year we have had less attacks than the other team, slow all over the place and predictable, injurys have played a big part , but some of his decisions are baffling.
Lets see how we go after the break with a few back, if its no improvement by xmas we are in trouble.

Agree... I have faith in Martinez to find the problem and a solution... I think he has largely done that for our defence.... It is a massive problem that he needs to be on the wing to see more ball... And that really comes down to the lack of quality and dept in our squad.... We do have problems, but I think he can still improve us even with these problems

Yes, it is the slow nature of the build up that is annoying me these days.

Fair enough, we are shorn of the guys who drove us on last year....Ross, Seamus, Kev or Gerald....I accept that.

So some other means of attacking with more pace needs to be found....and if that means playing it long for the runners more often them be it so.

At times today the ball was played back from the edge of United's box to Tim Howard.

It's Bobbies way mate, not going to change.

Wish i had your faith mate i just remember when the wheels came off at wigan he just seemed to wave the white flag.
He should have done more in the transfer window that was his fault he actually had money.
He deserves time and will get it but i just think he needs to toughen up and get last seasons head on.
