Roberto Martinez discussion

I think martinez is better suited to european football.
In europe he has done well but he looks lost in the premier league this season.
The biggest worry for me is how slow we are and how much we go backwards

Think Spurs' tactics were spot on. They stopped us building up attack in the half way line. Their players kept pushing and our Bobby had no plan b. We kept the ball and kept on passing but nothing can be done...

His subs have been the worst part this season. Last season when he did mess up his initial XI or things weren't going too well, his subs would be important and turn it around. They have been appalling so far though. Osman!?! McGeady for Kev?

Why he insists with at least one player playing in an ineffectual position every game is what I don't understand.

Too much guesswork at the back of most of the complaints for me. We don't seem to have any player in form, it happens. I don't know that you can say players are ineffectual because of the starting position, when no player has shown much form in general. It doesn't matter what position they start in when the ball is at their feet and they play a poor or inaccurate pass or fail to beat a man or control the ball.

As an example Ross was in the centre plenty today and still failed to really get at them. And thats just because he is not in form yet.

I think it's confidence, they have kicked on a bit from the poor start but cant get the wins a row needed to really get them believing again. You only had to see the difference between the sparky start today and the lifeless display after the equaliser.

You could say this for the next how ever many seasons if we want (and do) stay in Europe. How we going to adjust then, bigger squad? Cos the injuries will keep coming if we play more games due to cup comps. I wouldnt say it was because we've had a tougher run if fixtures, id say we threw the Arsenal and Palace games away and shouldve got a result at home to Swansea, particularly when they had ten. So we should be a lot higher to be honest.

Your players make the adjustment as do the staff as they get used to dealing with multiple competitions. Playing in Europe is a different experience, as is coping with playing two games a week on a regular basis for the whole season. We've been unlucky with injuries as they've all occurred in a short space of time, that won't happen forever.

And yep Spurs played very well. People forget to credit the other team when rushing to fume and over react about our own team.
They pressed brilliantly. I think Pochettino looked at the tapes of some of Everton's worst performances and made up his mind to hunt the ball down high up the pitch.

The mystery was that we had the goal lead and that approach was effectively scuppered for Spurs if we ourselves kept it tight with no chances being taken.

correct. When Spurs get their gander up they are a good team (eg v Hull second half). We let them into the game, gave them belief, and it was game over. We could not mentally shift into a gear needed to overcome them. I thin k it needs to be said, that we are pretty bang average this season

Of course but they aren't difficult lessons. It's the same mistakes over and over.
True and it's properly frustrating.

I'd like him to do another one of those podcasts with the fans as he seems happy to answer any questions thrown at him including ones about tactics. Be interesting to get an insight into why he does what he does in these instances.

Not even remotely surprised. He's alienating himself from the fans by outright lying every time we're obviously poor. Makes him come across as Brendan lite.

IMO he would only be alienating himself from silly insecure fans who need to hear certain words to reassure themselves that the manager knows whats going wrong and how to fix.

Rather than just trusting that he is a professional who has done pretty well with us, and will know whats lacking there and will work on it without having to criticise to the media.

Moyes spouted nonsense to deflect from the performances in all his time here, I stopped listening. Most managers do.

Maybe so. If they are all back though, I expect him to play them and play them in position.

The pace we play at this season is much slower than last season and I think it comes down to personnel chosen and a lack of self belief in teammates. Coleman is a good example of it: that lad has literally no idea each week who is in front of him. None whatsoever. That in turn has affected his own game badly. And you can see bits of that all over the pitch.

And it is going to take weeks before they are both at full throttle. In the meantime, Martinez has been playing them even though we have been carrying them for a lot of the 90 minute. Results will suffer in the mid term but when they are both up to speed, it will be a different matter. Coleman has been in and out of the team this season and is not fully up to speed. Today was a perfect example in the first half he had the whole pitch in front of him at times but refused to go forward. After the break he pushed it and took the full back on. Obviously, Martinez must have told him not to be so tentative.

It is important that players have other players in front of them on a regular basis. But the reality is that Martinez could have planned to play Mirallas or McGeady in front of him but injuries/moving players around because of injuries have meant that that was not possible. In a way Coleman has to adapt and if he is half the footballer I think he is then he will have to do that and do it well. No point putting your arms out as if to say 'who is there' as if that statement means you are exempt from trying to create something. Same with Baines at times.

The pace was slow because Eto'o was on the ball too much today and he didn't play particularly well but was played out of necessity. Personally I would have started with Ossie and brought Eto'o on. Eto'o on the ball slowed the pace as it did when Barkley needed too many touches and wasn't sharp enough. But that sharpness will come the more he plays. So Martinez will have to persevere with Barkley and Mirallas and over play Eto'o at times.

Well I see it as, we were much better and looking sharp. Got the lead, and then we hand them a goal, just like we have handed goals to lots of other teams this season. Then it's the problem of confidence. We haven't got a good run going to shake the nervy season start completely, so we are affected by every setback.

We finished with a record points total in the Premier League last season mate.

It's the challenge of balancing both that's impacting us this season and I think Martinez is risking our league form to have a proper go at winning the Europa League.

Whether that's a good or a bad decision will depend on your personal viewpoint (unless we actually do win the thing!).
