Roberto Martinez discussion

Stones. Jags. Baines. Coleman.

4 very highly rated defenders who could walk into any of the top 4 rated clubs defences.
Yet they often make daft mistakes time after time after time. Funes Mori is doing the same.

This isn't down to the players. There is a clear pattern that has developed. It was there in Roberto's first season too, but we appeared to have more fitness which helped us over the line by the odd goal.

I would also say that for the many positives of the 13/14 season that is still the worst performance I have seen at Anfield and we did show signs of switching off at times in games. Those moments have continued to increase sadly.

I just wish he could sort his game management out. But then I really wanted Mike Walker to come good as I had seen what he did with Norwich.

I think rather like Moyes would destroy previously good forwards Martinez style of the play does the same to good defenders.

"Come and join Everton, great defenders of the world and learn how to look really crap"

Think I'm at the point now where I'm edging more and more to wanting him out, not because I hate the guy or think he's a bad manager or anything but because I feel the job has finally become too big a step up for him. If there is a manager out there available then we should seriously consider approaching him in the summer imo

I do wonder what our new investor will make of Martinez. If he's the shrewd business man I'm hoping he is he won't stand for Martinez and his lack of ruthlessness on the field. Ideals have their place but just grinding out a win also has it's place, especially when on top and needing to see out a winning position. His team are soft

It is because, for some unfathomable reason, we are absolutely awful whilst also being absolutely brilliant, all in the same game. So while I dont "back" him, I struggle to think of someone available who could continue the great stuff, but sort the nonsense.

And at times these last 2 seasons, Martinez has sorted the dross. Last Christmas/winter/Eto stuff, the last 5 games, (11 1 or something), Howard dropped. He is not an idiot, nor a manager who serves up dull football, (wish he would at times!), but he has, to me, a fault line.

And what is so annoying is that that fault line is pretty easy to righten imo.
This is spot on. The problem is that we are so close to the dream of exciting and winning football that it feels to me like more of a gamble to change things no matter how frustrating. And as you say there is no obvious manager available who'd guarantee either an attractive or winning side. He's clearly not an all round manager, but who is, and he has shown willingness to adapt. But will he get credit if he does?
Narrowly losing a game we played most of with ten men against a team bang in form after missing a penalty wouldn't have seen a manager get stick in normal circumstances.
Loads of fans would have been calling for his head if Mirallas didn't start today, or if he'd brought Kone on who can hold the ball up. He needs to learn but also has to be his own man without fan pressure. Then we can decide if we need more than easily made adjustments. My feeling is we don't.
