Roberto Martinez discussion

I'm trying. By god I am trying! But no matter how much I want to believe in him, how much I want him to succeed and how much I want to just feel naturally positive about the man, I just can't help but feel very worried and ultimately negative about the appointment of Roberto Martinez as manager of Everton Football Club. I know there's an obvious divide in Everton fans' views and opinions of this issue, but what about the man wearing the mask like me. The man who's putting a smile on and forcing himself to look and "feel" excited about Martinez, but deep down knows that something just doesn't fit. I know I'm not the only one wearing that mask of jubilance covering a face of concern, worry and gloominess. Having watched the full appointment of Martinez press conference on YouTube, I think it's blatantly obvious that Kenwright is wearing that mask too. Some say this is a time of promise and future glory, with the players we have, the football Martinez' teams play and the fact that we're taking on a manager who won what Moyesey never could (a trophy!), and I'm happy for those people. Others say this is a huge mistake, with a manager that's never progressed a bottom five team which was finishing higher in the league before he took over and now under his reign got relegated, and I'm happy for those people too. At least you openly know where you stand. But those of you wearing the mask of delight covering up a deep down despair, put your hand up and make yourself known, because I know there's more than just me and Blue Bill.

oh dear fat stan

I was wrong about the fella, I still dont understand how he managed to get such a crap side like Wigan to destroy us at Goodison, beat City at Wembley and still get relegated tho, I honestly dont get it.

I hate that question because it's irrelevant to what I'm saying. Out of the managers that were available the only manager I would've gone for was Martinez, without question. He's not up his own arse, he seems a sound and intelligent guy and it is nice to know that he does believe in, and enforce, passing football. I suppose "throughthewindandtherain" put it well when he said any new manager would cause anxiety as it threatens to affect the upper tier stability that Moyesey brought to us. I suppose, like many who feel the same as me, ill say that I "hope" he works out rather than being particularly "confident" that he'll work out. Having watched that press conference though, I would just rather be "confident" than "hope" that he knows that we are expecting to be challenging for Europe. It's not a dream anymore. It's reality.

Having said all that, at the end of the day, all the worry about how he'll do is fantasy stuff really, the only indisputable FACT is that Martinez is now the manager of Everton. Based on that, there's only one thing we can do, **** the mask and support him like hell until he gives us any real reason to do otherwise!

...and also a fair bit of redemption

Wigan could 'sprint' with any team on the day...it was the marathon run over a whole season that they couldn't do.

I think it's gona back to mid table footbal. He is an awful manager who's team play suicide football. Some will be happy winning 4-3 every third week but it's not how it's done.

I predict the programmes will be flying on the pitch before bonfire night.

Hope i'm wrong but he has form, and you can only bet on form not hope.

The nucleus at Everton has 1 or 2 seasons left in it at most. It may carry us through to around mid table. After that the only way it can possibly go is backwards.

He was only picked because Bill can control him and get him to say the right things aka Moyes.

Thanks Bill looks like your safe for a few more years yet as most will lap it up.

...this one's a cracker by vacant hub

all the blues have been top class today, but it's expected from BIB, have you seen his 84-85 youtube clip thread

the man is a legend x

(I think he's a man anyway, apologies if not)

Aww, cheers Pat, appreciate the kind words. I am indeed a man! You too, Jib in Lad.

Merry Christmas to both of you.(y)

My only worry is that we get too carried away- so many people are saying we can win the league let alone a champions league place. It's brilliant and if we are still in this top 6 place mix come April it will be gutting not to make Europe.

Long may this purple patch continue- can we make champs league?! God it would be amazing. Scenes.

Yes deipnosophist! I appreciate you finding my redemption post! I think it saves my vault shame to some degree at least! I think it shows that really I was anxious about rather than full on against Martinez (and with some justifiable reason as well!). I have to say tho I'm so happy with how he's turned out. He's a fantastic representative of the club, he has utterly enforced attractive football and he is setting the building blocks for not only getting Everton into the champions league but also potentially winning the ****ing league! I dont think anyone could've foreseen that! (except for my friend who has admittedly been raving about Martinez for years!!)..

Good times are ahead for Everton I have no doubt about it! We are now certainly a very attractive club to top players across the globe (altho i have to say im loving and wouldn't mind maintaining the irish and british core we have at the moment!) and as long as we have martinez we will have a system in place that will allow these players bring wonderful success to Everton for years to come!

But we're not Wigan.

We're Everton and it's telling. Quality team, quality manager.

Quality.

Yeah, without doubt. Just thought that was kind of cool.

Must be great for Martinez, going from Wigan whom he got relegated despite his best efforts, which must of seen him feeling fairly low, cup or not.
Next thing you know he's at a great club, cleaning up against teams he's never beaten like Fulham and Swansea, possibly overtaken his previous seasons points tally before the new year starts, couple of top class loans, getting praise from everywhere, 2 points from the top, getting the best out of the team, improving massively on a highly rated manager, 1 defeat so far, etc...

I know we are buzzing as fans, but he must be on cloud 9, he's a positive guy no doubt, but even he couldn't of expected things to be going quite this well. Made up for him.
