Confirmed Signing Robin Olsen

Not convinced he's enough of an improvement on Lossl/Virginia but we'll see.

We made a mistake hoping that Utd/Spurs would do us a favour - the same mistake we made last season with Zouma/Chelsea.

Nailed it.

Also it feels a bit reactionary/kneejerk to me.

Unless, Lossl is keen to go/we see Lossl leave shortly (or even Virginia out on loan). We've only just give Virginia a long term deal so they must see something in him...

Just replying to both to save clogging up the thread.

We had Stekelenburg last year, and Virginia had come back from loan, and we also had nothing at all to play for by January, so loaning out Lossl was the sensible thing to do really.

Personally I just don't really go in for the 'better competition' line. I don't think there have been many instances where clubs genuinely have 2 keepers fighting it out for the shirt, generally there is an established number 1 and someone who will come in and do a job if needed. I've said before, United are the only club I can think of in the last couple of years where you could argue their number 2 could be number 1, and it has coincided with the worst period of form in De Gea's career. Liverpool have the best keeper in the league and their back up is a clown. I just don't really see any merit in the argument to be honest.

I agree with much of this. I've always thought the additional goalkeepers is a bit overkill myself.

I'll try to be specific in my wording, but I believe they will have signed Olsen as someone who is capable of playing first team football for Everton at a decent level. I do not believe they feel Lossl can do that, or Virginnia can do that, for different reasons. I believe there will be a sense, that Pickford may soon need to be dropped.

I also don't think they view Olsen as a long term viable alternative, and wanted to tick the question over for a year, where we can find a long term solution.

To a degree the 2 things contradict one another. We seem to have had enormous faith in Pickford to turn it around, and he keeps failing and making those who put their faith in him look a little foolish.

By many metrics, Pickford was one of the worst in the division last season. Olsen has played for one of the better Serie A teams, and equitted himself decently at Calgiari in Serie A. It's not much to shout home about, but neither is Pickford's form.

I mean cutting the waffle, I think Olsen could well play games this season, and may well be a better option than Pickford currently is.

Lossl and Virginia do that job don't they?

What is the difference fans on here give reviews of players, are you saying ignore our own fans?

I'd certainly ignore some on here. Saw lots of views yest and you know dam well they havent seen much of this keeper. So the 'prone to errors' is taken very lightly.
Bit like the many "james rodriguez will be a great signing..back in 2014" jibes i read before a ball was kicked.
Again. Pinch of salt.

It's not though mate. Whilst the back-up keepers generally play little to no part over the course of a season, they still train. The goalies generally train away from the rest of the players, for at least a part of the day. Good back-ups are important in maintaining standards and giving training a competitive edge.

I would say so yes. I'm saying it seems an odd and unnecessary panic signing to me, not defending it. The only other possibility I can think of is that Lossl wants out to play before the Euros and they've agreed to it on the basis that someone else comes in. Nothing i've seen or heard of Olsen suggests to me he's coming here to play, but I kind of hope i'm all wrong on that because I've just given up on Pickford.

Most ofthe people criticising this signing had never heard of the player a week ago

Dont you just know it.
Plus the thing with romero, who by the way may be a very good keeper. Not disputing that. But when you think about it his rep has more chance of being good because his ratio of games is so low he's not open to making mistakes. Just a thought.

I reckon we were probably allowed to think over the summer by CL qualified Man U that midtable Everton could take their third goalie on loan. Fast forward a couple of weeks though, and midtable United would look pretty foolish to be sending a good goalie to table topping Everton to allay their one weak spot
