This is his problem, he does not command that six yard box therefore it puts extra pressure on the defence every time the ball is crossed...

Confidence is an issue & it runs right through our team when our keeper performs like he has done this season...

Confident keeper = Confident defence = Clean sheets = Team confidence...

I have Oblak down as the best in the world right now, he is barely an inch taller than Pickford.

Come to think of it he is the same height as our greatest ever goalkeeper but Southall still dominated his area in this was in the days were goalkeepers got whacked by opponents much more than they do now.

If you have two goalies of equal ability but one is taller then yeah you take the taller one for the additional benefit they can provide.

Pickford is not a poor goalkeeper because of his perceived lack of height. He is poor because his goalkeeping basics are generally pretty ropy.

It's the same in other areas of the pitch, it's not the height it's the anticipation, the ability to jump, and also being able to cover all areas of the goal (not at the same time obviously, before someone pipes up!). Look at Cahill, not exactly a giant but could anticipate the path of the ball to jump higher and get there before others. Goalies just need to know where to stick themselves and have the confidence to command. Shot stopping is pretty much reactionary and anticipating where they're going to stick the ball. Being tall doesn't make you a good goalie, or defender etc. That kind of thinking over the decades is why we get lumped with Brett Angell because he was probably taller and more physically developed to get picked up as a youth.
Casillas, Neuer are examples of top goalies without being the tallest.
 

We have had these problems before Robles clean sheets commanded his area kept mostly clean sheets - playing an over the hill keeper in Tim Howard who was way past his best having nightmares most games......
Pickford has not got to that stage as yet, but is crap on crosses, and teams know it.......
Olsen did nothing wrong the last game he played ......

Because he is not particularly good! As I mentioned earlier he is the same height as Neville Southall and he was not scared to come off his line and dominated his area. Maybe he cant judge the ball correctly, maybe he is afraid of being hit, maybe he is just a bit thick, who knows? His height wont equate to his bravery though.
 

There's something very special about our club that just absolutely loves throwing away hundreds of thousands of pounds a month and get nothing in return. I think almost all of us could have guessed the Roma reserve goalkeeper was never going to be a successful signing here, even on loan. No idea who thought he would be the man to make Pickford up his game.
