Romelu Lukaku

Raiola said Rom could still go in the summer and so I think the new contract offer is more about inserting a higher release clause in the contract, standard practice to achieve this by offering an enhanced pay packet sweetener. Same thing happened at Swansea with Bony, had his wages upped to allow a £20 odd million release clause to be added to the new contract.

If this was a genuine long-term contract I would have expected the deal to be closer to £125k or even more. Players will be coming to the club over the next two windows who will be in the new Lukaku pay bracket and I'd imagine Lukaku could bristle if they get deals better than him.

130k with a highest paid player clause.

A huge increase in Roms wage - would allow us to increase the current wage structure in order to use up some of the allowance afforded us by selling Stones though mate - and IF we intended to sell him next summer then whatever wage he was on would then be freed up to redistribute.

As it stands right now, we currently have about 40m per season in wage allowance we haven't used and thus will go to waste - which based on the presumption we intended to increase to the maximum allowable under the laws is nothing short of a criminal failiure.

Even if we bring in 5-6 players on a good wage in the January - we will still be short a huge amount of what we 'could have' increased the wages by, and from that standpoint - the purported aims (to bridge the gap to spurs) and the actual result (deciding to not spend the required money to do so) do cast a lot of doubts about not only the intentions - reduced ambitions or hyperbole, but also in the fact we appear to be the only club i have ever heard off who has actually set out with the intentions of spending a large amount of money and increasing the clubs wages massively - and who have failed to do so...

This is kind of what i meant, but put better. I had a feeling there was something to do with wage structure increases... losing 1 500kpw player, we could bring in 3 on £150kpw and not touch any spend regulations...

I remember when he had Tony Cottee up front. Everyone said he didn't work hard enough, and he needed the ball in front of him. He scored 99 goals for us. Remind me of anyone since then who has done the same? It's the same with Lukaku. We have an obsession with wanting strikers who run around a lot. Latchford used to get stick in the same way. I don't care if Lukaku's stats say he moved 0.5km during the game as long as he scores. That's what he is there for.

I'm not arsed bout him working hard of he scores goals, what I'm arsed about is that he doesnt bring enough players into the attack as his touch gives the ball back to the opposition

It's not about running around a lot, it's about having enough control to hold on to the ball and not set up opposition counter attacks

His control is not good, it never will be. Hoofing it to him and hoping he will hold it up is a waste of time. We either need to pass it so the midfield is much closer to him, or play someone right up top with him. He won numerous flick-ons on Monday but nobody was there to get on to them.
