Stick a release clause in his contract and give him a pay rise. The release clause won't make much of a difference because he will only have 2 years left so we will have to sell him next summer. But not this summer. Personally I wouldn't have sold Stones either unless it was for footballing reasons.

If he negotiates / is offered a pay rise or indeed a formal release clause is included that would form the basis of a new contract which in turn starts the clock ticking againin respect of the Webster implications even if it's over two years. If he truly wants out there is no way his agent will take any extra money now or indeed recommend RL sign anything new knowing that Everton have to sale him either in this window or indeed the January window to be 100% assured that they will receive full value.

We would get full value if he still has 2 years on his deal.

At the end of season 2016/17 , unless anew contract is in place, RL is outside what is called the protected period. There is a short 14 day window following the last game of the season he would be able to give in effect notice and can move from the club. A compensation payment would then be payable but not a transfer fee. Whilst that compensation fee would probably be large it would be no where near the sort of money people are suggesting he is worth.

As been pointed out before very few players have publicly used this get out clause but I understand that the threat of its use is perhaps the most powerful weapon when a players rep is trying to force through a move

So back to your question. In this transfer window Everton are in a strong position to get near his top value but as the clock ticks down in the window and if the player wants out a lot of factors come into play. In value terms it becomes more a gamble. The January 2017 will not a good window to sell the likes of RL. It's very rare for a top money player to move

So on to season end the dilemma is the club won't be 100% in control and there is no guarantee the player won't give notice or if he does give notice and the says it will be enforced unless he is sold for X to Y.The reality is the details, the threats the broken promises are very rarely put into the public domain.

Most try to join up the dots or talk about doing things like making him sit on the bench and wind down his contract that won't happen unless he wants it. Players and their agents are in control and the only way you can keep control of your players is to make sure they never , in contract terms, are outside the protected period

it'll come to late to effect this but brexit should knock this nonsense on the head shouldn't it since it's based on free movement

also it's three years when under 28:

Article 17 of FIFA's Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players has a section on "Consequences of Terminating a Contract Without Just Cause". It states that any player who signed a contract before the age of 28 can buy himself out of the contract three years after the deal was signed. If he is 28 or older the time limit is shortened to two years.

Will be interesting to see what happens when/ if we do indeed leave the EU but that's a debate for another day.

Am aware of the under over 28 thing that s why I said in relation to RL at the end of season 2016/17 for he will then have completed 3 years of his contract

Nonsense. That's the first I have heard that a player with 2 years left on his contract can just walk away from it. Total nonsense.

Same nonsense that said we had to sell Stones to comply with STCC. What a load of rubbish.

If that was the case then plenty of players would have gone in some of the biggest transfer sagas of the past.
