What I don't get is the people that slate him and think hes absolutely shocking, then also say he needs replacing or we haven't replaced Lukaku??? If he was that bad then DCL or some young kid should be able to replace him easily..

That argument only really works if you assume that those people thought he was the single worst striker in world football.

Having said that, league positions haven't really changed that much since he left, so you could just as easily argue that his replacements have done an adequate job at a fraction of the cost.

We set up a certain way with Lukaku but had a glass ceiling in terms of what we could do because of his lack of ability. United have had the same issue.

What we haven't done is set up the team to play a different way with a different striker yet. We tried with Tosun but he's just lacking overall, same with DCL who is promising but still too raw.

Lukaku coming back to the side we have now would be disastrous as he is the antithesis of the striker we need in the system we're trying to play.

We're trying to play football now - make it stick up top, play off a central striker and get into areas where a playmaker and inside forwards can hurt an opposition. In short, we're trying to play like a top side would do - Lukaku wouldn't fit the bill for that ambition.

Because he'd have cost us points elsewhere by being Anonymu Lukaku 90% of the time.
But my post was in response to another suggesting that even if he'd scored 15 for us last season we'd have still definitely have finished 8th...not quite the same thing really is it,don't remember him costing us too many points when he was here.Just scoring goals, but then it was a different manager playing a different system.

Can't believe how many points he cost us while he was here with his 87 goals in 4 seasons.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

It's difficult to compete against the better sides at the best of times. It's near enough impossible to do it with a striker who can't ease the pressure by holding the ball up, and who lacks the technical quality to play in tight spaces.

He was as much of a liability in difficult away games as an error-prone defender or goalkeeper.

But when he played for Koeman we played a different system. DCL is far more suited to Silva's set up.Two totally different scenarios.

Never had a good first touch. Seems like it's gotten worse rather than better.

He definitely has some strengths we're missing now - like actually putting the ball in the goal fairly regularly. But he was always generally poor at bringing other attackers into the game. This was fine when he was the player everything was set up for - but he's not actually good enough to carry a team when everything is set up for him. He's a bit of an enigma - the anti-DCL. It would be nice to have both - let DCL play the first 60 minutes and wear down a defense and then put Lukaku on to score against the tiring defense. Or play Lukaku against the bottom half crap and DCL against teams we have to fight.

Not for the money he'd cost, his attitude, or the wages he'd expect of course.

He never kicked on like I expected and hoped he would.

I don't really believe that there's much variation in how the vast majority of managers set-up. Almost all of them just shoehorn players into whatever the vogue formation is, and Koeman and Silva are no exceptions. It's basically one up top and three supporting, with the only differences being how much high-risk, low-reward arsing around they like to see from their centre-halves.

Lukaku needs to be at a club where they're just grateful to have a reliable goalscorer, because they know that they'd be looking over their shoulder otherwise. The greater the expectations, the greater the scrutiny that his game won't hold up well under. I think he'd be bascially the same player under Silva that he was under Martinez and Koeman, albeit slower and richer.

But DCL has replaced him up front but we're playing a different, more versatile formation, the goals are now shared amongst the team and we've got a player there who can hold up play and is willing to learn and improve all the time.

Lukaku has regressed and is still pointing to his world class team mates where he wants the ball, (I noticed he never points at his shins)

Yes,yes yes DCL hasn't got the same goal tally, it goes without saying and there is obviously room for improvement there, but DCL doesn't care who he's playing against, Lukaku has a mental block against the big boys and I do believe that his ego is such that he doesn't see the need to make any attempt to improve any further.

I was astonished to see the comparison photograph of how he's bulked up since he left us, not the brightest coaching idea that one.

I honestly wish him well in whatever he does next, he gave us some good moments, but he was frustrating in the end with his off the field antics.

I don't see DCL as the be all and end all, but he will continuie to improve and until we dig up another regular goalscorer lets get behind him and the rest in the coming season.

Don't think we pressed with energy under Koeman, DCL would have fluffed chance after chance.Whereas Lukaku would flounder under Silva, expecting him to work hard. A case of horses for courses.

Kane isn't that good at all especially recently, just hes English and hasn't played for us so he gets praised. His performance in champions league final was shocking.. also this thing of Lukaku scores pointless goals is laughable

Kane is a level above Lukaku mate. There's a reason Rom's looking for another club.
