I agree with the theory, absolutely. As I said, I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, and we don't even know who he was talking about.
It's not always that simple though. Footballers are humans at the end of the day, they have feelings, they can have a crisis of confidence and they don't necessarily get better through trying harder. It's also worth noting that they might not even want to prove him wrong. Sometimes a player might agree and think maybe it's time for a change of scene, so they switch off a bit while concentrating on the next step. Maybe they need to be told they're wanted, need an arm round the shoulder, or thrive off responsibility. If the manager had said that to them instead of saying, 'I don't really fancy you' maybe they'd have gone from strength to strength.
Fellaini's an interesting example to use- a player many Everton fans demonised as the archetypal bottler and sulk now being lauded as the example that the current players being demonised as bottlers and sulks need to aspire to.

Well HK went to Gray's house and told him he was moving to villa, and he had been a key component in us winning the league. You can't be more ruthless than that.
I see where you're coming from, but if we have players whose ego's are so fragile that they'll down tools as suggested at a bit of criticism (and they don't have bags of quality that we can't afford to lose), they're not the characters we need. That type of character is in part to blame for our bottling, weak-willed capitulations in recent years.
You can maybe massage the ego of truly world class players, to keep them onside, but that's not the position we're in.

I'm liking Koeman more and more as his first year in charge goes on. Really tells it like it is and I think that is exactly what is necessary. Keeps the players on edge to perform to high standards. If they can't handle this kind of pressure, then we know they won't be able to handle the pressure of playing in a cup final, for a champions league place, or even a title.

He wasn't always as nice about it
Plenty of ex-player autobiographies I've read where they've said once Howard had made his mind up he didn't want them anymore, he'd basically freeze them out as if they didn't exist - nobody took it personally because he was concentrating on the ones who he wanted to work with. You can imagine what Dave would say if he found out Koeman was doing that!

He's trying very quickly to figure out who wants to be there and who does not. Who can hack it and who cannot. This is going to be a high performing club. This is going to be the same way regardless of expensive or not. Young players the same. Either they buy in or not. That doesn't cost any more or less than other leadership styles. It's about being clear with expectations, being clear as to the ramifications if you don't meet them as a player, and getting players that can meet them.

I'm not suggesting we molly coddle them or retain them forever. I'm saying it;s bad strategy to get them from being onside when he arrived to a position where they can easily seize on his words and not put it in for the remainder of their time here.
It's just rank bad management and only something someone with poor emotional intelligence would do.

What I like about Koeman is that he very clearly demands high standards from his players and if they don't attain those high standards, his attitude is that they are not good enough
It's a very different mindset to the one we've been used to. It's a winning mentality.
That said, it will rub some players up the wrong way, undoubtedly and he won't bond with some players like El Loco seemed to do
His attitude I have zero problems with, I do expect him to start producing a brand of football which is a little more pleasing on the eye than what we saw in Nov/Dec though if we're handing him all this money to sign player with. I also expect us to be much closer to the top 6 (or in it) this time next season

But then again, we have no idea what's going on behind closed doors. He could have players slacking off in training, not following instructions, not getting on board with what he wants. He could have had words with players already and not got a response. In which case, no loss in calling it out publicly.
Players who may move on, are gonna end up at smaller clubs on less wages. So if they choose to slack off and not put it in, they're only shooting themselves in the foot.
Again, that type of character is not what we want or need, and I reckon Koeman recognises that we'll be shut of those players this window or next.
