...precisely, so I ask again: why is this false ceiling being put in place by some to suggest we shouldn't measure a manager's worth at Everton by getting top 5/6 next season?

"We cant break into the Sensational Six". Pfffft.

Sorry, that isn't going to fly.

Fair enough mate, i havent personally said any such thing and cant answer for others who have done really.

If he qualifies us for european footy next season, far as i'm concerned it will have been a very good debut season given the task at hand when he took over

He's getting his time.

Look, here's the situation as I see it expectation wise:

7th this season = fair enough
7th next season = not good enough, but not sackable, just a good sign that after 4 windows and his own squad largely in place he can't get us where we want.
Any failure in a third season (if he's still here) to make an assault on a CL spot is grounds for dismissal.

Having seen what this feller has done elsewhere and what he's done here I think he's a steady Eddie who doesn't have that certain creative spark that squeezes out the necessary extra points to convert an also ran into a CL spot team.
I think that's reasonable comment. I haven't been impressed with him so far and think he's limited as a manager. However he's picked up recently after finally settling on a formation which suits the players we have. My biggest gripe has been the football we've been playing and the lack of involvement/intergration of younger players in the squad. Both have picked up recently and he's got the tactics & formation spot on in the last 2 games. I hope he continues like this and brings in a couple more of the youngsters. Because you can't have enough boss young scousers in the team!

Love it when someone puts quotation marks around something that hasn't been a quote from anybody, and then argues about it.

Agree Dave. 7th is par for the course and if we achieve that and no more then it's in no way a ringing endorsement of what's going on on the pitch

It looks like he's worked out the best formation to suit our best players.

Holgate and Williams look very comfortable as part of a 3 - I feel like mori is an accident waiting to happen at times and he'd be the first defender I'd replace.

Baines and Coleman are better going forward than defensively and this system gives them more freedom to attack.

Having 3 in midfield (who all move!) allows Barkley more freedom and more passing options which allows him to dictate the play more.

Having 2up top keeps someone closer to lukaku to bring into play as he struggles when he's isolated.

Things seem to be coming together

By luck or good judgement (or both) He does seem to be getting a bit of a handle on it.

I think he has shored the defence up. Which was a must,Only for the debacles at chelsea and watford our defence stats measure up to even chelseas and tottenhams. Hes phasing out some of the older players. Jags and Barry where Martinez failed to do this to his detriment. He hasnt been afraid to change things around to find an answer and he has blooded some very good youngsters and im not sure Martinez would have given Davies a chance due to his stubborness in all fairness. I htink barrung injuries we will have a strong finish to the season.

Yes honest in his assessment of players and no qualms about dropping players. That streak of ruthlessness is what all good mangers have. Without it you get nowhere and staleness.
