Ronald Koeman discussion

Great to see some positivity!!

If we can put a run together there is no reason why we can't do this. The RS are only 9 points ahead.

The Mancs were 10 ahead and now its only 5.

There are 16 games to go and that gap can be filled...

I am going to put my cards on the table here and now.

I will be disappointed now if we do not at least progress one place from where we are now by season's end.

The three sides above us are not convincing anyone and they have more distractions by way of Cup competitions.

We have the wind in our sails right now and the proverbial "favourable fixtures" coming down the pike over the next month or so.

This is proper on ;)

One thing I will say for Koeman is that he has been honest about his expectations as to how high we could finish, and has been from the start with this squad. I don't see that as negative.

I think they will be relatively satisfied with 7th/EL qualification if we make that.

If he can get us to the point where he thinks we have a decent crack at the Top 4, I think he will come out and say it, and for an Everton manager to say that and mean it, would be a great thing.

I really liked that he aired his frustration after the Leicester game, we saw action taken soon after and I think we have someone now that the board have to listen to.

Have you been on the ale?

We have 36 points. We'd need MINIMUM 70 points to make a fist of it. 34 points from 48 available.

This is ludicrous talk. We've actually won only 5 of the last 17 games or something daft like that, so that trend would have to be exploded beyond belief in the remaining 16 games.

He gained 39 points, over the last 18 games with saints last season mate, a repeat of that form would see us fanned close to hitting that total.

Very unlikely ofc as we have some horrid away fixtures to come but ...

I think it's harsh to say 'disappointed' Khal...

We threw away some points in that bad run pre-xmas, and that may cost us.

But while we are capable of getting top six, it's still going to be a tough ask.

As you say though, they have cup comps and we don't.

All we can do is focus on a game-by-game basis. We're in a good position and maybe with one or two more signings we can build even more momentum. As bad as the run pre-xmas was, we're now on a run of five wins from our last seven league games.

There looks to be a new resilience about the side and finally players looking like they want to be there.

The six sides ahead of us are all used to being in lots of competitions towards the end of the season like, and never really affects them. People are talking like Arsenal or Utd are going to suddenly collapse because they have an FA Cup game or something.

Not gonna happen.

The problem with closing a gap is that you can make a Herculean effort to close it but then staying ahead of the team you've closed on is difficult. For example even if we did win another 4 in a row (making it 7 in a row) and United dropped points so we were level, the most likely outcome after that is us failing to keep up our ridiculous form and then returning to form and just opening the gap again. Very rare that big gaps are closed unless one team completely tanks but a Mourinho side is unlikely to. We should just focus on building a platform of consistent performances for next season and see where we end up.

Keegan was 12points clear, who knows ?

I don't think people are saying it's impossible, they're saying it's really very difficult. Expecting it to happen is setting yourself up for disappointment. There's a reason why Koeman's realistic goal has been seventh all season long. That didn't change when we had our strong early run and it's not going to change now that we're picking up steam again.

I genuinely think Chelsea will run away with it, because I am not convinced by any other side above us right now. City had their run at the start of the season and are coming quickly unstuck. Arsenal flatter to deceive unless Sanchez is really on form, and Liverpool have gone off the rails recently too.

Problem is we've got to travel to Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal and United before end of season, meaning those six pointers are unlikely to be decided in our favour.

The next 4 games is the 'easiest' (I know, you can't say it like that, but on paper it def is) run we have until the end of the season, so let's see where we are after that and before we travel to Spurs.

The pressure is all on the top 6 though, woe betide the managers who finish outside the top 4. Hopefully in amongst the carnage we can get very close to one or two of them if they start dropping ridiculous points (we saw what the pressure did to Liverpool in their easiest fixture of the season)

We just need to win as many games as we can between now and the end of the season. We may well only finish 7th due to the form of those above us, but we cannot underestimate the effect that just winning games will have on the squad. If we get a good run together now, it helps the squad to believe in their abilities, in fact, the way Koeman has been treating some of the underperforming players, the very fact they see the season out should be a huge boost to them. With a summer break unhindered by Euro's etc, it gives Koeman and the team a chance for a full run-up to the start of next season. I'm encouraged by this season, but excited about next.

The only managers I think would be 'safe' out of those top 4 spaces would be Mourinho because it seems like Man U are committed long-term with him, and Guardiola because he has a bigger fanbase than City and he's part of their image now.
Although if we pushed one of them down to 7th... might be a different story.
