Ronald Koeman discussion

I've got to say I think it maybe came a few minutes too early as Kev was looking a real threat on the counter.

But I agree that the change needed to be made (i.e. to stop that overload) at some point

Maybe, as I said earlier, Mirallas had gas left in the tank. I was pleased at the time that Koeman was so quick and decisive in making the tactical change as Shaw had exploited the overload a couple of times, but with the benefit of hindsight (wonderful thing) maybe it would have been better to give it another 5 or 10 mins and hope to nick one on the counter. That being said, our counter-attacking last night was woeful in the 2nd half, plenty of opportunities but bad decisions all round, Kev included.

It sort of was, but Young is a right footed winger playing at left back. He isn't going to naturally overlap

Shaw is a gifted attacking full back - as soon as he came on, you saw him finding acres of space down the left. One in particular I thought instantly that we'd need to change something as Mourinho had picked a hole in us with the change.

It gave them natural width on the left which they'd not had all game.

Young played RB not LB last night. Like someone said above the change may have been needed at some point but it was way too early in the game for me. Was going to be very difficult to hold out from then.

Pennington did well. DCL had a stinker.

But neither were the reason we didn't win in the end.

Player wise no. Pennington did very well I thought.

But our shape changed, we had a dangerous outlet with Mirallas (who played well) and Barkley (who was growing as the game went on). He took them both off further isolating Lukaku and inviting tons of pressure onto us. I think he made those changes way too early personally.

Taking off a player who was playing boss and it left us with no out ball, that substitution actually created more pressure on ourselves.

Yes and no. I think the DCL sub created more pressure on us as we lost more or less all of our threat on the counter.

The Shaw issue had to be addressed and Barkley wasn't going to track his every overlap

They took Blind off at HT and Young then went to a strange position where he played in both full back positions depending on where the ball ended up

Young played LB after about five minutes in the second half pal

I agree that the Kev change was too early.

As @toffeeblue9 is rightly saying though, we did need to stem that flow of Utd attacks down the left so I can understand why it happened - I just think it was 5 minutes too early.

The Barkley one - hmm - he was goosed. He had to go off. Thing is, DCL offered zero help and that's not even his fault tbh, he just lacked the experience or strength. Valencia had to be the one. He offers natural support to Rom and could stretch the play.

You sure Herrera never dropped into LB as that's what BT Sport were saying. Said Everton should exploit that side because of it e.g Holgate getting forward.

Tbh I don't think Rom was actually bad last night either. He was wasteful, perhaps, but so were Ross and Kev to an extent.

But the tactics were right RFUS. We played it perfectly. You can't go all out when you have Jagielka, Williams and Barry at the back who lack the pace to recover, especially with the pace of Rashford and the general all-round bossness of Zlatan. We threatened on the counter and we actually had several really good chances to go and get a second (Ross's cross, Rom's cross to Kev, Barry header - just a few examples from the second-half).

We take those chances and - actually even as the pundits said(!) - that game is well won. We need to learn to take those chances. It wasn't like the City game where we literally had one chance and scored it.

The squad is threadbare but tbh I'd rather it be the kids getting a go than the tosh of the last two seasons. That being said, the last 10 minutes was not the time or place for DCL and we had a player there in Valencia who could well have helped us see it out.

We had it right defensively, I just thought that the subs killed what little counter attacking threat we had. And from that point on we were stuck defending 99% of the time, which makes holding on to 3 points very difficult indeed.

But like I said, a point at Old Trafford is not to be sniffed at. They've gone what? 20 games unbeaten?

United were toothless and we had them on a plate for the taking. He played it second half with a pop gun counter attacking unit, not committing bodies to attack in sufficient numbers. Then he loses his nerve and takes off two players in Mirallas and Barkley who were occupying United and putting a shift in.

Never mind agendas and 60 seconds from "unqualified success", Koeman ballsed that up.

He likes to present himself as a top manager (and the gullible fall for it) but he's miles off, and the tactical errors he's made this season at key moments underlines just how bang average this feller really is.

The tactical errors are only errors if we do not get a result. This applies to every manager and not Koeman alone. He has us winning games at home and has built a fortress but the away games we haven't got it right yet but are chipping away. Same applies to all teams whereas home records are better. We have cracked the lower teams but still need further purchases and better players to crack or level up with the higher teams. Its his first season with us and after the glitch of the 1st half of the season we have improved immensely but there is still a gap between us and the better teams (away from home at least). This he will try to rectify in the summer now he has his first full season to know the players skill sets and lack of. I am quite content with his first season seeing the progress he has made from the previous 2 seasons. We are now back where we should be and this summer will be the true test for him and with Walsh to get the right calibre of player in to improve us further. So far so good for me.

If we was not winning 1-0 in the 93rd minute I would agree. To go to the next level we really need to hold on to leads like that.

I don't think "the next level" is having almost every man behind the ball for 30 minutes and desperately trying to hold on. The other 5 teams above us wouldn't have done that in my opinion. It's a bit Pulis.

Not that I expected us to bomb forward, but the Kev off, Pennington on sub was proper Moyes.

Herrera dropped to left-back until the 50th minute. Jose changed it because he was getting done by Holgate down that side.

It had to be done though - or at least we had to stem that side which we did. Ironically enough, it forced Shaw inside and that meant he was in the position to have the shot that caused the pen :D

But yeh, probably a few minutes too early.
