Ronald Koeman discussion

We needed to keep either Mirallas or Barkley on. DCL coming on was never going to help us, he's not the type of player who can run at people with the ball or hold up play.

Koeman lost us two points with his choices of substitutions.

I don't think "the next level" is having almost every man behind the ball for 30 minutes and desperately trying to hold on. The other 5 teams above us wouldn't have done that in my opinion. It's a bit Pulis.

Not that I expected us to bomb forward, but the Kev off, Pennington on sub was proper Moyes.

True, we invited the pressure on.

93 minutes on the clock though...I expect us (or any team) to hold out regardless of opposition.

Yes and no. I think the DCL sub created more pressure on us as we lost more or less all of our threat on the counter.

The Shaw issue had to be addressed and Barkley wasn't going to track his every overlap

The Pennington one would have made more sense with maybe 10 mins to go. You could see Man U were worried about us on the break and we were dealing with everything they threw at us, taking Mirallas off just seemed to hand them the impetus and they just camped in our half then, just wish Koeman would have been a bit more braver.

I'm blinded by all the tactics on this thread. Koeman should hold a People's Assembly of Ideas over which he presides with the thumb up or down.

We are not at that level though as of yet. We cannot pretend that we are as good as all those above us so no point in the toe to toe stuff. We are aiming for that level and hopefully this summer will get us level or a lot nearer than we presently are.

Judging by this thread, we can all do a better job than Koeman. I think his biggest error last night was bringing DCL on. Other than that, it was a much better performance than Anfield where Koeman did get it wrong but so what - he can't always get it right. Spurs was the other disaster!

I challenge any sane Evertonian to say they're disappointed with this campaign. He's steadied the ship, started to bring in more quality albeit not the quality we want to see in 5 years time, but it will never happen in one season. I see progress at our club. Greater progress will happen when he stops bringing on DCL instead of Valencia or Lookman!!

*puts hand up in the air*

I am disappointed.

We had a totally dismal autumn and our season effectively ended in the first week of January.

We lost home and away to the RS.

And apart from last night, we failed to turn up at any of the big away games (I know we got a point at City but a six goal spanking would not have flattered them)

And that's the truth if it.

Yes, the ship is steadied and I think the future is looking brighter than it was twelve months ago.

And off the pitch huge strides are being made with the new stadium.

But on the pitch?

Thus far it has all been a bit average IMO :(

And if that makes me less than "sane" then send out the men in white coats :pint2:

A lot is being said of the substitutions last night and whether RK made a critical error.

A slightly alternative question could be, where on earth did the fourth official get "a minimum of four extra minutes" from ??
Neither side needed any medical attention second half and at 15 seconds per substitution, that's about 1 minute... even though they brought two on at once... allow maybe one minute or 90 seconds for a bit of time-wasting and at most it was three minutes.
I honestly fail to see where the four minutes came from and how they can be justified.

I don't think it is as clear cut as - not at their level yet=cant go toe to toe. It is of course down to the type of manager you have and how he decides to go about things.

For me it's like when Trappatoni was with Ireland. I personally wasn't bothered complaining too much about the details of the horrific football on display because basically we got what we paid for with him.

Koeman is what he is. He seems he would be more cautious than gung ho and that's what we paid for, but that doesn't mean that another manager being more positive can not achieve results in these big games just because the squads worth less, its their first season or whatever other reasons given.

In these bigger games next season, I am hopeful we will see more ambition and a noticeable shift in the psychology of the squad in how they handle them....or handle any big moments that come our way. However, I am more inclined to think he will stay more or less the same.

We will see!

All officiating staff were hopeless.

I am not saying it is clear cut. I am basically saying that at the moment player for player we are well behind the higher teams and that is crucially the difference at the moment. Koeman sets up the way he believes is best but still we do not have the squad or team as good as all the higher teams so I am not surprised we struggle against the higher teams especially away from home

No we're not at that level, you're right. Just think we should aim to be going toe to toe not holding on for dear life. First time we've dropped points from a winning position since December so don't even agree that holding onto 1 nil wins is what's separating us from the teams above.

We quite simply don't have enough quality. At least not yet. And we need to believe a bit more. We were the form team in the league before last weekend, but I never felt like the players acted like it.

I want a bit more swagger is what I'm saying. RonKo has done very well making us more solid and competitive. But the next level for me is adding some more attacking quality and the belief that we can be the best team on the pitch regardless of opposition.

He didn't though.

DCL was the wrong sub but it's not what cost us.
