Ronald Koeman discussion

Sadly it's been a bare minimum season. Martinez was woefully below expectations but Koeman has restored them to what the minimum should be. We are probably the 7th best team in the league so finishing there for me is par for the course. It's ok for his first season as he was rebuilding the bomb site Martinez left but throwing the cups was absurd and the 7 cursed games have so far continued to be cursed. All to do next season.

He didn't exactly throw the cups though.

He played sides that were more than strong enough to beat Norwich and an under-performing Leicester.

Except they didn't. They swanned out not taking it seriously. We were nowhere near the level we normally are in a Orem game. Both opponents were wretchedat the time but we gave them easy games. That fault lies with Koeman for not having his players in the right frame of mind.

A lot is being said of the substitutions last night and whether RK made a critical error.

A slightly alternative question could be, where on earth did the fourth official get "a minimum of four extra minutes" from ??
Neither side needed any medical attention second half and at 15 seconds per substitution, that's about 1 minute... even though they brought two on at once... allow maybe one minute or 90 seconds for a bit of time-wasting and at most it was three minutes.
I honestly fail to see where the four minutes came from and how they can be justified.

Think it's 30 seconds added on for each substitution mate, refs also will add time on after they book a player as well.

I am happy with were we are at the moment ,we have mostly repaired the damage done to team and have regained our best of the rest position. As humorous as this sounds it means to me we are ideally positioned to improve next season . We play ,mostly , organised football again. I go to the home games expecting to win again. Unlike many ,it seems ,I actually like and respect our current manager that's entirely subjective anyway of course. He certainly makes mistakes and earns some criticism but what manager wouldn't. I'm extremely optimistic about next season. As for the season being over ,it isn't over until the last game for me.

Not buying that one bit. But fine, if that's your opinion.

Done okay this season, next season will be where he will be under more pressure because, after this summer he will have had 3 transfer windows, and if he's given decent money to spend there can't be any excuses.

Exactly. A return to Europe is good, overall league form is decent, good bedding in of youngsters, good buys, defence looks ok. Cups terrible, derbies rubbish, away at top side curse continues, collapse over winter continued, patchy away form continued, weak mentality continued. If the summer window goes well he will have to improve on the above.

Well it depends what is expected.

There's clearly a long-term plan/project in place.

Step one was to get top seven and hopefully Europa League. This was outlined at the very start and we have been on course for that all season.

We're a way behind in terms of quality, but we need to use this summer to build on what we have with quality additions.

Next year we have to try and break into the top six, and/or win a cup.

Yep some of our frailties still remain.

Fair enough.

The cups and timid derby displays are the only real disappointments for me.

Autumn was bad but that Watford game changed a lot. Whether you agree with it or not that's when Koeman decided he'd had enough time to assess the squad and knew that a big glut of them simply weren't up to scratch.

BTW......in case anyone thinks I am disappointed in Koeman....I am not.

Granted I was a bit worried about him during the autumn fiasco and I have some issues with certain of his transfer decisions but overall he has had a good first season.

When I say I am "disappointed" I mean in the sense of another season had passed without much to quicken the pulse at the business end of the season :)

What was the reason then? We were st home against two poor sides. You're saying it wasn't the line up. If these players play to their max they win both games comfortably so who is to blame?

Er, the players, for not playing to their max...

Deulofeu and Ross in particular had absolute stinkers in the Norwich game for not putting three or four great chances away.

Against Leicester, we took the lead and had been comfortable all game, yet suddenly the players switch off. They clearly got a rollocking after that game as we went on a 7-match unbeaten run.

One last thing I will say on expectations - I see a lot of posters on here just tend to use their unrealistic expectations as a stick to beat the manager with.

I have no idea where these expectations come from, unless you are of course @Kev The Rat who as you can tell by his username is possible still living in the 80's expectation wise.

We haven't won sod all for over 25 years, only when Moyes was appointed did we have a few years of getting ourselves back at the right end of the table after year of drudgery. The the next manager came in, did a great job in his first season but then turned out to be nothing more than an over enthusiastic dullard and took us backwards for the next 2.

Moshiri has been here 12 months now, Koeman not even that, that is all. If we improve on and off the pitch as much as we have over this 12 months by the same amount, then we will be challenging a little higher again next season.

Yeh it's a shame. 30 seconds more last night and we'd have been in the hunt for 5th/6th, but ultimately I think it's going to prove to much, which is a fair reflection of where we're at.

That being said, we still have to make sure we get Europe signed and sealed.
