Ronald Koeman discussion

Why is it that Koeman's team (Southampton and us) perform better at the second half of the season?
I think it's that the team needed time to adjust to Koeman's methods.

If you assess his first season at Saints, there was a honeymoon period and then they hit a bit of a roadblock before coming on strong again. That's probably due to Koeman getting used to the league and the players getting used to him. Plus the squad that Poch had had been torn to shreds that summer.

Second season - in many ways - he almost had to start again in terms of several key players (Clyne, Schneiderlin) leaving, and a glut of new signings coming in. So again it was the same scenario really. By the second half of the season they were playing really well and I remember distinctly them hammering us at Goodison last April, and Koeman was furious that they'd only got a point.

So this season, a bit of a dead-cat-bounce so to speak, but the then by December it was clear that some players just couldn't fit (and those are the ones who have left) into Koeman's squad. Still some holes to fill but this season the young players have come in and done just that with more gusto and quality than the tosh before them. Now, the side is fully used to Koeman's style and moulded to play how he wants. At home, we definitely play with more freedom, so hopefully next season we can improve our away form while maintaining our home strengths. With Europe (should we get there of course) there could be a lot of games so a big squad/clever rotation will be important - which means the youngsters that have come in will again play a key part.

That being said, it's key there isn't a huge squad turnaround this summer. Of course, the deadwood will go, but the core must stay (though it looks unlikely I'll admit) in tact for us to at least be able to have that continuity - i.e. not a load of new players who have to get used to the manager's style.

  • More points than anyone from losing positions
  • 17 different goalscorers (best in europe)
  • Giving youth a chance, when rumour had it he wouldn't
  • Best home form for 27 years
  • On course to smash our record PL goals tally
  • 5th best defence in the league
  • Beat last years points total with 11 games to go
  • Fumes when we win
  • Protects players when we lose
  • Only chelsea have shown a better season on season improvement
  • Given Pep Guardiola his biggest ever league defeat
  • Top scorers in the EPL this calender year
  • Sound

That is pretty damn good, and very enjoyable reading on a Monday. Delighted for the season ticket holders.

I've been open about not expecting anything special from RK, but this season he really has given himself a solid platform to work from in the next and has done very well to move us on from the previous malaise to the point where I can't see us slipping so badly again.

If he can give this club back it's balls and get us really firing in the big games like he did with Southampton then maybe he can win us a trophy here. Feeling more positive than meh this morning about the new boss.

Good managers try to peak around may if they can Fergie was famous for it

to be fair, it was one of the best in the league at full strength. Only baines atm is first choice out of that whole back 4 from today. We'll definitely buy a centre back, possibly two, i personally think we only need one. We definitely need a top keeper and it could be argued now we need a good right back, which is bloody annoying. We also no have no backup for baines after selling oviedo, i doubt garbutt will be trusted, but who knows, maybe with him and galloway coming back as well as mori playing there, we won't address that just yet. We definitely need to be buying more players at the top end of the pitch for my money. I know that sounds silly given the way we're smashing teams at home atm, but we would have smashed united for 4 or 5 if we had better quality up there.

Ha, i felt sorry for the lino. If he doesn't know for sure, then he's guessing, he's got to spend a bit of time make up his decision of which is more likely so felt the ref was in a better position and left him to the decision

Ive said this a few times but I think we need to play a high defensive line, theres only 5 or 6 teams 'better' than us....the rest we will be camped in their half and if our defenders have PACE and are able to PASS then they can push up to the halfway line without the fear of being done on a counter attack

With Jags or Williams its suicide to do that...

Holgate and possibly baines (unless he loses his pace) are the only 2 defenders we have who have the speed to get back on a counter. I think were fine at right back with Holgate and kenny with coleman in the mix later.....Galloway for me is similar to Holgate and should be retained but we need 2 new fast and solid centre backs as well as someone for baines to mentor.

If we had super defenders in this mould we could sit high up the pitch against utd or anyone else but especially the weaker teams and push them back. For me that's the way to go.

to be fair, with the amount of business we're likely to do, it could pretty much the exact same scenario for him next season. I'd presume we won't let any of our starting XI go, but we'll probably have 4 or 5 new players in there by next season ha So he may have had 4 seasons in a row in the prem of transitions seasons ha.

If he signs players suited to the system it might ease the teething problems somewhat at least

Never forget. It's there to remind you what utter failure feels like

Very good first season so far. He's restored respectability to the club after 2 years of dross.

We still choke against the big teams (barring the City win), but that we are closer to 3rd than 8th points wise illustrates the great strides we've made this season.

To miss out on the full 3 points at Old Trafford was a sickener because I believe we are a better, more dynamic team than them - it's nice to say that we can honestly compare Everton with the likes of Man Utd at this stage. I think our finishing position is academic now, but it's important to retain the form that sees us win more often than not, as that will be a great platform to base next seasons campaign on.

I just hope beyond hope that we can keep hold of Rom even if it's just for next year. If we can, then the world is our oyster and I'll expect to see a much stronger defence and more consistent and potent support for Lukaku.

I'm trying not to get too attached, as he's probably only here for 2-3 years, but I'm enjoying going to Goodison at the moment and I think he's building a strong foundation for his eventual successor to take forward

He really has righted the ship and we're seeing some good football as well

I'm pleased with the job he's currently doing, no doubt

Ayyy in that time, Bramley Moore will be built & lighting up the city, We will have a very strong squad. I don't think he'd jump ship at that point :D
