Ronald Koeman discussion

Haha. Literally the first time I've ever posted anything like that. Work with a guy (happens to be a Blue) who was a young pro at Leeds before he was in a car smash and had to retire. He still has a fair few contacts around the game. Part of his job has him semi-regularly at Southampton's training ground.

May be jarg (and if it is that's the last thing I'll ever post that he tells me) but hey ho.

Romeu is good, yes. Would he make our team ahead of Schneiderlin or Gueye? Not IMHO

Not ahead but would still take him. Thanks for the Forster tip; last season I'd have said yes but he's been jarg this year.

It's not even news, of course a former Barca legend would love to manage them. All indications are Barca won't move for him this summer, so we can get on with trying to win a trophy next year now please Ronnie.

I actually like the honesty in his comments today and am reassured by the "we" and "one day".

Although I'm not liking that basically he's another clubs' man, beggars can't be choosers and overall I like him and like having him. Also, those words in the context they were said are not the words of a man who is about to leave.

Deep down I think we all knew that he was just passing through, I think I even said it at the time when he took the job

To me, Koeman has always been here to get us ship shape before bequeathing the club to his successor, who will then hopefully be the manager who builds the dynasty. His role is to be the foundation builder, so that someone else can build on that foundation and have us kick on to the next step in the plan

Ideally we'd get another season of Koeman at the very least, because he still has work to do here

What a disgusting manager Martinez was looking back. Then he leaves and takes millions with him in compo. Surprised he has the nerve to show his face in public. Looking forward to his demise with the Belgium's before he ends up at Wigan again.

Koeman has been brilliant for us. Agree with a number of posters on here, shifting the dead wood is the priority which he is doing. He has an air of confidence and no nonsense, a refreshing change from the clown Martinez with his smoke and mirrors.

The one thing that worries me with Everton is, we hear this summer is going to be big, we're going to sign player that will be the envy of others and just like last year it's a shambles and Valencia comes in on loan. Can't help but think this will be the same this year.

I've never understood why we don't do what some of the other clubs do and sign/line players up before the window opens. We mess about and kick start the season before we get players on board.

With Europe starting early we need to have reinforcements bedded in as soon as possible. Go and make a statement to make the footballing world stand up.

Don't agree with you entirely as Martinez in his first season was excellent. You cannot possibly fluke a whole season purely because you inherit a squad, and there were many occasions in that first season where Martinez' ideas were positive and he even proved a lot of doubters wrong with changing games with positive substitutions that weren't necessarily popular with the fans. I clearly remember our fans groaning at his decision to bring on Osman in the away game at Aston Villa for example (myself included). Osman came on for Barkley in the 60th minute, and changed the game, getting an assist and a goal to win us the game:

Fast forward to a year later and the same Martinez who had been a breath of fresh air the season before stood on the sideline without making a single subsitution as we slumped to a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Southampton who were on a 5 game losing streak:

He became far too subborn and got carried away with the hype and believed he could now do no wrong. The 2 seasons after his first were shambolic and he set us back considerably and that is where I agree with your disgust for him.

We're now back to where we were pretty much and there can be no excuses from the board this year. We have the money, we will be playing in Europe next season and we have hugely ambitious plans for the future. Koeman, Moshiri and Walsh need to get it right this time and they can't hide behind excuses like they did last summer. It could be a very exciting summer though if it turns out how we hope.

so RK would like the Barca job, well so would nearly every other manager

Pretty much this. If you asked almost any manager in the world, they would want the Barca job. The fact that Koeman is a very successful ex-player is the link that keeps it news.

Surely it's pretty clear at this point that the first season under Martinez was a happy accident whereby Martinez's penchant for attacking meshed perfectly with a defence that was still solid as a rock from Moyes's time in charge. The fact that we got worse the longer Martinez was there really says it all.

The more RM got his hooks in and imposed his ideas and setup, the more the defence absolutely went to pieces.

By saying that he is basically throwing his hat into the ring for the job. Come calling and I can't refuse etc.

I like honesty but sometimes it can be too much. It's nothing we don't already know but I'm sure we would be better off with a manager saying he would rather be here than anywhere else than effectively this is a stepping stone. Next time he is unemployed he can big up his relationship with Barca as much as he wants.

I agree with this although the comments are like a politicians , deliberately imprecise and could be used equally by those for and against him. My interpretation is he knows he's not seriously in the running this time but he wants to let them know he definitely wants the job in the future. Also I think he's telling them to judge him on his current project, us.

Every job is a stepping stone to something isn't it? Who here is in the same job since leaving school (unless you've just left, or left to start a wealth business venture)? That's what ambition is. Hopefully he achieves something with us before taking his next pay rise.

I would say its more a 'monitor my progress at Everton' then when/If i achieve something giz a bell.

Unfortunately until we start achieving we will always be a stepping stone for players and managers.
