Great stuff. They won a few games by running up some goals. Buy how does that cut across what I posted? They were a team that played it long and swung in a lot of crosses. It was basic up and at 'em stuff. There's no point in comparing them with Martinez's outfit at their best. The latter were confident throughout the team on the ball and could move it around. You can contrast them both, but you cant compare them.
Southampton didn't 'play long'.
They were quick and direct.
They had a midfield full of energy and wingers who played as forwards (Mane/Long) to stretch the opposition, giving their CF (usually Pelle) space to link and hold up play.
Martinez's first season was top-class, though as we got towards the end looking back, the same errors that we would go on to see for the next two seasons started creeping in.
