Ronald koeman . New barca manager.

Barca hiring him shows how far they've fallen. A completely brainless decision.

It wasn't like anyone better was going to sully their reputation by jumping onto that sinking ship, knowing full well that they would be scapegoated for failure and removed by the new board.

Koeman is being well compensated for taking a fall.

Out in March once the new president is in. Xavi to take the job. Messi to sign a new deal. Koeman off to beach.

Xavi may wait until more of the financial dust settles. If he walks through the door now, it's likely to end like Lampard. That's not because he's at Lampard's level, but because the squad is a mess, the club hasn't the finances to fix it and the board is going to need someone to blame the next time elections roll around.

I'm also not convinced that Barca can actually afford to sack Koeman, unless Xavi is willing to work for peanuts.

Those problems can probably be contracted around - Barca could write Xavi an extremely long-term deal by today's standards that doesn't pay particularly well until year two once Koeman's wages are off the books.

It's still Barcelona. Even as bad as things are behind the scenes almost every manager would jump at the opportunity. Very few have the leverage to pass on that job and still get something at a similar level.

Failure is generally a bad career move.

What I take away from it is that Koeman is headed towards closing the managerial chapter of his life. He has the dream job, won't retain it and burned his home country to take it.

He'd have to step down considerably to find future employment, and I just don't see him doing it.

The thing is I don't think taking the job was predetermined failure for competent managers. Obviously that isn't Koeman, but someone like Pochettino or Allegri probably does better and at least has them competitive in the CL and maybe for the Spanish league.

Some mid-table club will eventually come calling for him like West Ham or Newcastle. Failure in management these days doesn't really stop you from getting another big job.

He should never have left the national team. At least Roberto knows the safety of international football is stopping him being further exposed as a fraud. Koeman’s career at a top European club is over. He’s so abrasive that I’m not sure even a mid table team would go for him anymore.

I argued with a Barça fan today who insists that Messi generates twice the amount for the club. I don't believe that personally but if it were true it would mean the board must be even more incompetent than they appear. And that's a high bar.

If that is correct, Barca must get the credit for monetising him so efficiently

I don't think Roberto is a football fraud. His talents are obviously more suited to managing a decent international team than maintaining a prolonged stint as a domestic club manager in the premier league. I think more power to him if he realises this and sticks to what he is good at.

Koeman wasn't humble enough to have the same thought process and stick with being a decent manager of his national side and improving the perception of the footballing world to his somewhat lacking coaching skills.

If Belgium fail to win an international trophy with a generation including Courtois Kompany De Bruyne Hazard Lukaku supported by the likes of Aldeweireld Vertonghen Meunier Witsel Mertens then it’s an absolute travesty. I think they wasted their best ever chance to win the World Cup. He needs to deliver the euros or they might always think what might have been as I can’t see many young Belgian players coming through as good as that crop.
