Ronaldo (no not him)

Was fortunate enough to watch him live in the flesh, I think he was probably 2 exploded knees deep by then as well but he was still miles above everybody else on the pitch that day. Unbelievable player.

Watched 2 documentaries about him in 2 nights. The Phenomenon and Brazil Road to 2002. Both very similar, both great to watch. I think he's still a best ever contender but injuries really did wreck him, so sad to watch it back knowing the story. But Brazil 2002, what a front 3. Imagine trying to defend against them. Think he had 8 goals and 5 assists alone that world cup!

Nah, never his greatest fan.
His game was so direct and physical that it when he grew older and his body changed he never quite new how to adapt his game to that.

I much, much preferred his predecessor in the Brazilian team - Romario... an absolute genius
It wasn’t to do with him getting older, it was to do with his knee exploding twice, back to back. Even after that he scored 83 in 127 for Real and won the Golden Boot at World Cup 2002 so I’d say he adapted pretty well.

My favourite player ever and if not for those knee injuries would be in the conversation for greatest ever.

Easy to say that it was all because he was very physical, as he was insanely fast. The picture of his shows it as well - lasered on the ball, body moving in a blur:

For someone this fast however - he could take the ball down in his stride/step as smooth as anyone and had a fantastic finesse shot and dribble.

As people have said - even when his pace more or less went, he was still head and shoulders above pretty much anyone.

Even with his thyroid problems and weight gain - he played for Corinthians and was a ~1 in 2 striker, while basically rotund. That's definitely not down to pace lol

Simply the best, nobody ever before or since can do what he could do with a football at lightning speed and then the composure to slot just about every time. He also played in an era where defenders were allowed full blooded challenges, something Messi and the Ronaldo now didn't have.

Injuries curtailed his career but his body of work before those knee injuries qualifies him in the best ever group, to me he's #1 the most exciting footballer I've watched.

Well, football all about opinion, isn't it? Plenty of people will disagree with me, but plenty will agree. I will always prefer players whose game is based around guile and vision - for me the greatest players I've seen are Maradona, Zidane and Romario.

NO YOU MUST AGREE WITH US AS YOU ARE CLEARLY WRONG!!!!!!!!1

Tbh different types of players, Zidane moreso as he's a midfielder. Him and Pirlo are breeds that basically don't exist anymore in the same way - you just can't take the ball off them, even though they don't really have blistering pace or anything.

I'd argue that Ronaldo did have great vision as per highlights and watching him play in the tournaments and with Real and in Italy when I was younger and now, but more relating to seen where the space is and how to move in it and so on.

Shame about the injuries and health problems, honestly, but even with them he had a 18 year career, which is not too bad at all.

As to the guile and vision - Ronaldinho is up there, shame he was more of a party animal than a footballer lol

He played in both the Spanish and Italian leagues when they were both the toughest physically demanding leagues in the world. Centre half's could still get away with kicking lumps out of you.

He was physically so much more impressive than Messi or C Ronaldo and had as much skill as either.

An amazing player.

Zidane moved at about half the speed of Ronny but took on a whole team that including el Phenomenon, Rivaldo, Ronaldino and a whole host of other 'aldos when he was 34yo and made them look like a bunch of journeymen.

Personally I think Ronaldo was perhaps also the most hyped footballer there has ever been - it was an era where Nike were getting into Football, and the made the Brazilian team and their main striker their focal point - not obvious when you are getting marketed to.

He did score that great hattrick against United though, which was cool beans. Mind you, even Beckham got a couple of goals in that match coming off the bench, which is statistically much more impressive, and nobody's proclaiming him as the GOAT.

Elaborate on the first point por favor? Or do you mean in the 2006 WC (where ironically I think not a lot of players had -inho in their name lol ).

He also didn't do that but OK.

This has nothing to do with marketing btw, people just have eyes and saw greatness. So did other players, so did coaches. In fact, so did Zidane himself, several times.
