Ross Barkley vs Wayne Rooney

Rooney by 20 was world class although he peaked around then too.

Hopefully Barkley will surpass him but even if he gets close to Rooney in his early twenties he'll be some player for us.

The Rooney who first burst on to the scene for us was on his day unplayable. I'll never forget him basically dragging England through the Euro 2004 qualifiers. Whenever he had the ball running at the Turkish defenders he had them terrified, 3 or 4 players on him at once. For us he was a fairly inconsistent goalscorer (not helped by the ten being nowhere near today's level), but once he got his move to United, Fergie wanted a different player. All the excitement was coached out of him, and he's lost that explosiveness.

Barkley has a lot of similar attributes, but his body has developed at a normal rate. Not every 16 year old is going to handle the Premier League the way Rooney could. It'd be interesting if we were able to see how Barkley would've been without the leg break and subsequent banishment by Moyes. It feels like he has lost 3 years of his career and development

Rooney edges the skill I think. Ross has the better attitude though, and I think it will take him far. Will be better for England than Wayne imo.

Rooney is the better of the two now, but Ross has great potential and can become another great player for us
hopefully.

Like it has been said on previous pages that game against Bolton Rooney was unbelievable, after the game which
finished 0-0 Moyes said to the reporters who were praising Rooney " he never scored did he" ,while in the stands
Bobby Robson and Alan Shearer were in raptures over Wayne's performance.

So for me Ross will have to improve quite a lot to become better than Rooney.

We as evertonians have had on our books the three greatest ever english footballers produced, Gazza, Rooney and Barkley and if Mr. Kenwright can keep his job for a couple more years...............when he sells Ross to City, he will in fact oversee the completion of selling the Crown Jewels, then , will people finally realise that he is no more an Evertonian than Mr. Moyes was. I know Gazza came Ten years too late, I know Ferguson Ruined Rooney on the left wing. Give Roberto two years with Ross, and if Roberto can't do what he promises, then let Ross go with our good wishes.

This version doesn't count:

No mate I'm going to properly fume if that happens.

Gazza? Do me a favour, he was curl-up embarrassing in a blue shirt. Rooney we could never have held on to so £28m was a good deal, probably rescued the club's finances from melt-down. As for Ross many of us are not convinced; media pundits love him but they don't see him week in week out. A work in progress or another Rodwell, time will tell.

Rooney was a more consistent version of Barkley really. They were both fantastically strong, two footed technically gifted footballers but I think Rooney has far better mental attributes. I don't remember him having quiet or bad games for us and carried an enormous burden on his shoulder at such a young age.

Barkley has the potential to be as good as Rooney though and has most of Rooeny's technical attributes.

Rooney was much better than Barkley at the same age. Barkley, actually has to show me a lot more before I totally buy into the 'next big thing' hype.
