He's not got the Liverpool connections that Benitez had, so he could win round supporters with performances on the pitch. Football fans have short memories when someone is doing the business for the team.

The problem with that is that he has been pretty rubbish ever since he left us, and I think he's finished at the top level.

Have to agree. Most gave Benitez the benefit of doubt even after he called us a small club and isna kopite demi-god. Barkley just shafted us out of some money.

I think he'll be fine with us. Certainly a step above what we have

I loved watching Barkley play for us. He's one of the best we've had in recent years for sheer command of the ball. Unfortunately he seems to struggle with everything else.

The team is bigger than the sum of the parts. I will give him my support if he comes back. He will have something to prove. I would love him to roll back the years but its asking a lot. I do think his footballing abilities are better than most of our midfield. With a run of games you never know.

He called the McNeil deal according to @MikelsGoat
Interesting

If it's actually true that he's in Liverpool at the minute when Chelsea are playing in Italy, then that does sound like it could mean something.

If it happens, I won't be happy. But we're going to have to wait and see how it goes.
He called it first, but hes linked us to about 20 players this window, he seems a blag merchant to me.

It's going to be so awkward after all the Ross the Rat chants/abuse when he's warming up at Goodison :D

But maybe our midfield actually needs someone who can move the ball to the wings, who actually has some athleticism and actually "cares" (I use that loosely lads) about the Club. Surely that's a bit better than what we have now?

If he comes for like £10m then surely that's sound?

100% it boils down to lack of funds, who we can realistically target and who will actually come.

It would be a dreadful move still for all the reasons previously mentioned though. I don't know if he's finished or not, I've barely seen him at Chelsea tbh but he'd he getting it both barrels from a large section of the fanbase that's that's sure.

To be honest, getting Barkley back for next to nothing would be a good deal IMO. We've never replaced him and he's not going to take an age to bed in.

For a minimal fee, you know what you're getting and it's a big improvement on our midfield. Where as spending £20-30mill on someone who's on par/just above his quality (that we can attract) would be a bigger gamble with our finances.

We won't be in a relegation scrap again with players like him (Gana, McNeil, Broja) and be comfortably midtable. And that's all I want.

It'll be a lot lower than that, Chelsea just want him off the wage bill

Depends on wages mate and he's barely done anything for years. I think we've already took a similar punt on Dele and the jury is still out whether he has the hunger and desire

nah he played a lot in his 2nd-season, considering his age. lad was near-knackered.
my memory of that time is different to yours but just looked at his wiki-page and it looks like you`re right but i reckon he was a sub loads and didn`t play that many full games
