Ross Barkley

....some Wednesday fans were also saying that he was a bit of a luxury and not what they needed at the time. He's obviously a different type of player to Neville and its wrong to compare them individually, but Neville's of much more value to us at the present time.
Amazing stat on Sky this week that since Neville joined us we get twice as many points in the games he starts in comparison to us playing without him. Moyes recently said that points were extremely valuable and he can't take chances on selection - I think thats why young Barklay is on the periphery of his thoughts.

Neville missed 7 games this season - to say without him we did badly should be seen in the light of the fact that 4 of those games he missed were against Tottenham , Man City , Arsenal and Chelsea - now was Everton bad without him or were they playing against better opposition when Neville was conveniently not available? To give all the credit to someone like Neville who was not even playing in those 4 big games is not a fair conclusion and a misrepresentation of his alleged influence

............if this lad was good enough he'd be playing for us now. There is too much hype on here. I sincerely hope that he turns out to be the real deal but if I saw his name on a current team sheet ahead of the likes of Neville (yes Neville), I would be very concerned.

I give up on the Everton forum.

The whole 'we earn more points with X player' stuff is utter garbage, always has been.

You judge a player based on his actual contribution to the team, not some convenient list of results which makes it look like he makes our midfield tick.

Baines was out and we won two games 4-0 and drew 4-4 with United, by the same logic we should think of dropping him.

So what you're all saying is that Barkley is ineligible for Saturday but we're gonna sign Ronald Zubar on loan and play him up front?

Gibson made a name off that ffs

I dunno there is a certain ammount of bias in that players can look good and yet not actually have any effect on the match.

Whereas players who look inefficent on the pitch can sometimes if you study the stats actually make a huge difference because their best work is positioning and other stuff that is easier to miss.

The Makelele principle, lets call it.

Which is the value of comparing how the team does with players in or out of it.

...oh dear, apologies for having a different opinion. As I said this isn't Neville v Barklay, but me saying PN is more effective at this time. Neville made his debut for Man Utd as a 17 year old and made approx 250 appearances for them - 6 Premier Leagues; 3 FA Cups and a Champions League; capped at every level, 59 full England Caps. Similar number of appearances for the Blues. Ferguson and Moyes are not bad judges. I sincerely hope we can reflect on Barklays career one day in the same light.

Ferguson's opinion of Neville as a 24 years old left back and right back shouldn't really factor into people's view of him as a 35 year old defensive midfielder, though should it?

The vast majority of those acclompishments were done while he was playing a different position to the one he plays now. You might as well suggest that Ashley Cole would make a superb forward.

.....very fair point, but at this time I still think he has more to offer than Ross. I've watched a lot of the boy, particularly in Youth games and he is a real talent but he really is a luxury. I honestly think the serious injury he had has taken its toll.

It's ridiculous to compare the two anyway because barkely isn't a sitting DM. Nor is Fellaini.

Neville can do that job, Gibson can, heitinga, hitz and Junior. That's it. Bringing in other midfielders and saying how come they can't get in the team ahead of neville is missing the point.

The person barkley can't get into the team ahead of is osman. Or possibly naismith at a push.

And that's the thing which may drive me to drug abuse.

Oh I am more than willing to castigate Moyes for sticking with Naismith out wide rather than playing Barkley there.

It's a bad decision on pretty much every level possible.

I'm also willing to castigate him for playing Neville in midfield. Which again is something I think is obviously stupid and not really working.

What I think is unfair is castigating Moyes for playing Neville over Barkley when he's not doing that.

do we really need a sitting DM in games like cheltenham or wigan at home? i know what your saying, but if i was the manager, if gibson's out injured, i don't see the need for having a player playng that role and therefore the question of picking barkley over neville becomes relevant.

not saying you're wrong btw because you're not
