Ross Barkley

He has been selected for England so why drop him looked good when coming on last week - he has had a good season so far hr links up well with Lukaku - he came on far too late yesterday - simply should be started every week - I seen Joe Royle as a youngster he was played very week as a youngster and then became a EFC great!

I want him playing but I don't think it's a case of him being dropped, more that RM wanted to get him a little breather. Probably with the view that he had started every game, plus the internationals and busy Xmas period in the horizon.

When we talk about Barkley being rested its not in the usual sense as in he is tired or played too much, so you can't really compare his age with Osmans and say why the hell does 32yo Osman not need resting.

Martinez is managing the player and I don't think he believes, or that most top managers believe, that a 19yo player no matter how talented, especially one whose already had a bad injury, should play every game in their breakthrough season. Especially if he is going to be playing with England also.

With no European games, already out of 1 cup and the other N/A currently, I don't really think there's a reason for resting a 19yr old.

Unless of course it's all about keeping him grounded etc. there's no doubt it's cost us points these last 2 games him not being in either starting line up.

Disagree tbh, we don't want him to burn out (look at that Sterling from last season) and he needs to learn he's not a guaranteed starter every week otherwise he could get complacent.

Also, we don't know for sure he's cost us points by not starting, he didn't make much of an impact when he came on yesterday.

I would feel better if I knew for sure that it was Barkley being rested for these two games rather than osman being rested for one.

Well obviously you can never know for sure 100% like, but he certainly changed the flow of the game vs spurs. We also play so differently with him as No.10 apposed to osman. Could of been a whole different game against palace if we'd started well with a dangerous Barkley. Of course he could of had a stinker of a game and it make no difference but when available I'd ALWAYS want Barkley starting before osman!

Imagine taking Rooney or Ozill out of there respective sides and replacing with osman...

I agree he can be far more effective, he links up with Lukaku and I don't think it's any coincidence that Lukaku's performances suffer when Barkley isn't on the pitch.

As davek said its such an important posistion in modern day football of 4-2-3-1 and certainly in Roberto's setup. You really can't afford to have one of your weakest players in that role, who lacks most the essentials needed to excell in that role (pace, strengh, goal scoring, killer passing)

Even playing poorly Barkley can still get the ball deep and drive us forward to relieve pressure, get us up the other end quickly etc. osman simply can't do this. I think it's very important especially at the start of a game to set the tone of the game if you will. Puts us on the front foot so to speak.

Osman can certainly offer something in that role also but as showed against villa, only when the game is in the latter stages and the flow of the game is already set ie were on the front foot and trying to break someone down. A fresh osman off the bench with maybe some different ideas is a good asset to have.

Hopefully RM knows all this and is just giving Barkley a little breather before a crucial period. But in future if he's being rested I'd rather start with a Miralass or even Naismith as a No.10 than ossie.

Slipping under the radar somewhat this week with England. All the talk appears to be about the young S'ton lads starting.

Personally think Roy has already made his mind up 90% that Ross is going to Brazil as the wild card.

Gazza of 1990?

Looking forward to him coming on second half and showing them all how it's done!

Not been mentioned once this week, in the shadows of llanana pffftttt!!
