Cole was awfull defensively against Germany and was out of posistion constantly. Ronaldo would have run riot down that side had he been German.

Ok, maybe Cole was not match fit but it's a myth how both players stand now that Cole is better defensively. In years gone by certainly but now? Nah him not having it!

Those stats weren't from last season, they were from 2011. And Baines has only gotten better in all aspects of his game.

Baines was at fault for the first Chile goal, which is why people are all over him.

Defensively I think he is a bit off Cole, but Cole is now on the decline, and is still as good as Baines defending.

its just an easy thing for the meeja to portray, lazy journalism as per usual

They have both gone backwards since 2011. Last season virtually everything positive(attacking) went through Baines at Everton. Not sure the same could be said of Cole, but Baines probably did less defending, because Distin covered his forward runs. They could both be that little bit further past their peak by Rio...and Hodgson might want to take Shaw or Gibbs instead of one of them. I'm not suggesting Baines and Cole won't go...just suggesting what COULD happen. Does Hodgson have to name 30 and then cut it to 23? I would suggest that there will be three left backs in the 30. This is all without taking the possible injury factor into account.
And Baines has not 'gotten'(?) better in all aspects of his game. By consensus he is having a very poor season this season, compared with previous seasons.

A lot of people are footballing retards though- you can see some on this board occasionally arguing that Osman should be picked ahead of Barkley or McCarthy etc.

The same media that was all over Baines for his first England mistake against Chile are currently scratching their heads as to why there was no creativity last night. The creativity that Baines, normally, provides in buckets.

Spot on mate. Hate Ingurland fans, and the media around it.

Mods can we change the title to Baines v Cole?

Barkley looked good last night, obviously not everything came off but he was positive rather than frustrating.

Thought it was his worst cameo in a while tbh. Looked a little lost after one or two bad touches seemed to rattle him a little. Rather reminiscent of his cameo's under moyes.

Not having a go like he's still boss and will be an amazing player very shortly.

You also see people claiming that he will be world class, which is equally absurd. This country is far too insular when it comes to football, so our young players get massively over-hyped because we don't have a decent handle on what other talent there is out there.

I know you only post here to slate Barkley, but plenty of pro's say the same thing about him, he's a special talent

If suggesting that claims about Barkley becoming world class are premature is now considered "slating" him, then that goes some way towards illustrating just how detached from reality English football fans are getting. The same 'pros' that were saying he'd be the next Gascoigne were making the same predictions about Ravel Morrison a week later, and if Will Hughes signs for Liverpool we'll no doubt here the same again. It's a joke. Barkley will definitely be England-standard, but the gulf between that and world class has been getting wider for quite a while now.
