The thing is with the Rooney situation I can kind of understand what they were saying at the time. We were still pretty ****zer at the time. It didn't look like even with Rooney we'd be getting anywhere near the top half, never mind the CL. We were also skint!
We are a top 4 contenders currently. We have the cash from recent sales, the new tv money, which unlike others we have not already spunked! And whilst that doesn't leave us rich, we should at least be comftabale currently.
The likes of ronaldo would always be on course to leave for a Real Madrid etc because that's the pinnacle, the dream for those players. Every Portuguese player wants to play for Real Madrid. Every young scouser, ideally would like to win everything with Everton or Liverpool.
IMO its all about whether Everton can keep challanging enough, showing ambition and picking up some trophies along the way to keep Ross. Much like Liverpool did with Gerrard. Either way he'll be here a fair few years yet, hopefully a very long time!
My ultimate dream is to see Barkley playing in the same EFC team as Rooney. That would be special.
