Man City's punishment for breaking the FFP rules sort of shows they're serious about the homegrown rule. I'm sort of worried that City will place an outrageous bid for Barkley now. They're one of the few clubs who could afford him at the moment. Placing such a huge bid would just worsen their overspending I know, but their money men could probably find a way around that.

Regardless of the sanctions they are in trouble with their squad and homegrown players next year. They are almost certain to be losing Barry and Lescott. Then Milner, Wright, Richards and Boyata could all be off leaving them with 2 home grown players (Hart and Clichy) in their squad. They need 8 for the Champions League.

Here's the thing. If they find themselves in such a position then we'd have them over an absolute barrel. I'm not saying I want to sell any of our players, I don't, but if they're so desperate they need to be coming at us with 60-70m plus bids for our players then we're in a good position.

Barkley would be insane to leave a team where he is guaranteed a starting place when on form while he is still developing as a player.

I'm sure there will be dozens of rumours of us selling him (and Stones) over the summer and in the years ahead, but really what team currently above/around us will offer them better opportunities for game time at a good level?
