Ross Barkley

Remember though, Barkley got a lot of the unnecessary hype that Alli got when he first broke through too.

Alli played no better in the first half in Germany than Barkley did last night in the first half. The panel at half time raved about a shot that Alli ballooned in to the stands that Welbeck set up for him, and also a classy turn and failed pass that Barkley would have been pulled up for by England fans and Evertonians for being "wasteful" in possession. Barkley also did a run last night from his own half, that Lallana messed up, and I didn't see Alli do it once in Germany.

I'm not trying to be harsh on Alli the other night though as he was excellent in the second half and the driving force behind the win. But he didn't warrant the hype in the first, and the England team also looked a lot better on Saturday when Barkley came on. I also noticed a Holland attack from Alli losing the ball carelessly last night, but of course it was overlooked.

Completely agree with all of this.

Very good post it also serves to back up the point that they actually complement each o
Completely agree with all of this.
me too they quite simply have to both play. I think they can complement each other

Maybe we notice it more as Everton fans. But some England players can give the ball away under no pressure Ie Henderson delpth. Players like Rooney Walcott sterling Ali can lose the ball when trying to take players on.

I remember a friendly v Italy last year and delpth gave the ball away about 10 times under no pressure. No screaming from Roy or the commentators criticising him.

Sturidge is a great finisher, but I think when he drops 40yards out his all round play is poor. Miss controls the ball, lay offs don't come off and turns into trouble.

Yet there is one young lad, who can't miss control once, give any passes away, lose the ball under pressure and every time he takes a player on he has to beat him. I think there would be a totally different mindset if he played for Utd Liverpool or a London club

Another great post even if my blood is now boiling at the reality of it. Barkley is a stat mans dream ball retention is excellent yet somehow he is labelled as giving it away easy.

Wasteful in possession, I totally disagree with this, his pass stats are very good for an attaching midfiehder that's always trying to look/pass forward.

The problem is options when he's in possession. Going back to Spurs Ali will have 3 options infront of him most of the time. Kane, ericksen and lamela, and sometimes dembele will run past him. The amount of times Ross looks up and sees lukaku marked by 2 defenders and Lennon/geri standing on the touch line. And behind him McCarthy and Barry are holding hands. And cleverly doesn't offer much as atacking threat.

Needs to play deeper for me and have more options and movement infront of him. Think he needs a Roy Keane type behind him not Barry.

Also it's easy for teams to come to Goodison and mark lukaku and Barkley tightly. Knowing full well Barry McCarthy and cleverly are not going to cause them any problems

Yup, fair analysis in terms of lacking 'attacking' options (hence the like).

Do you not think his decision-making around deciding to beat players vs using wide players vs improving final ball is not an area for improvement?

Completely agree with all of this.

Yeah not pulling up other players for the same areas Ross is still developing maybe frustrating for Ross fans ( I am one)... it doesn't iron out the validity of the criticism though.

I do like the general vein of this forum which is to drop Ross deeper and allow him to attack into spaces with options ahead of him. I also think he should shoot more - and as daft as it sounds in a more disciplined way (i.e. get it on target rather than smashing worldies) which would benefit him, Everton and England

Lampard was a great example of economy, decision making and timing versus out and out ability - which Ross also has.

Out of nowhere, papers to report Ross to United for £45m tomorrow...

..and who are we playing tomorrow I wonder?

Yeah, hysterical that Klopp brilliantly masterminded a home draw against a team that beats Liverpool once per millenium :)) if it was us the press would be saying another two points dropped!
