Ross Barkley

Wilshire and Henderson did not play, and thus did not play themselves out of the team.

Lallana...I dunno, but he offers more out wide than Barkley (though admittedly that is damning with faint praise).

Ross is a brilliant talent. That does not mean he should be starting this Euros. Or even playing. However his talent is enough to bring him as a nuclear option, or simply to have him a part of the squad as his future so obviously lies as part of the setup.
Dunno, maybe it's me but not being fit enough to play normally tends to rule you out of playing. Wilshire was shocking tonight, he's hardly played for last two seasons how he's even in the squad is beyond me, never mind the team

Completely agree. I don't think Wilshire or Henderson (but mostly Wilshire) should have traveled with the team. Bring another defender, Drinkwater, Townsend (width - what?), or someone that has performed this season.

I'm just arguing that Ross Barkley - he of an utterly godawful 3 months - may not deserve to be playing in this Euro based on form, confidence, or really anything other than England fans glomming on to the next big hope because what's on the pitch shows the true character of English football.

Rather than accepting England are just bad, and likely will remain so for some time people blame the manager for not picking a player who was being booed by his own (hometown) fans for months due to how bad he was playing.

Roy isn't going to make England great. England does have (uncomplimentary) talented players. But those players don't work as a team, and the English players that would care enough to really give it their all aren't talented enough to do much (a team of Lee Cattermoles and Mark Nobles would probably get further...they just would never win it).

Lee Cattermole would be a Lion for England.

Who wasn't playing when? Alli, Wilshere, Henderson and Lallana were all playing and were all a waste of space. Not an inventive idea between them.
Ross didn't play himself out of the team at all as he was picked to go to France, just ignored by Woy when he got there.
More Ross-bashing to come next season by the sound of it.
Henderson and Wilshere weren't playing club football at the end of the season, they were injured. That was my point. Roy already loves them both whilst Ross who he was on the fence about was playing poorly.

And vault me if you like, I didn't bash Ross at all during the season I was one of his biggest supporters and he's probably my favourite player but if you think he played well over the last three months of the season you've got to take the blue tinted specs off.

Obviously I agree he's better than Henderson, Lallana, Milner and Wilshere in my opinion too by the way, I'm just saying why Roy isn't picking him.

Although disappointing for the lad, it's hardly a surprise after his end of season form and possible fitness/bulking issues, however still think he has more to offer than wilshere and henderson. I think koeman will sort him out. On his day he's a class act, very weak mentally.

If that is true (and perhaps you're right) why did he take him in the squad?

I have heard from a source that Ross sneaked back to the hotel and ate the whole teams post match tea and patisseries. Lard ass.

With Ross its all about expectation. We know what he can do and the rest of the country knows what he can do therefore a benchmark has been set. If he played yesterday and did all the safety play of sideways passing and passing back and played simple then he would have been crucified. That is Hendersons benchmark and nothing more is expected from him so he is called steady. Ross isn't allowed to play steady due to the talent we know he possesses but we all know that losing possession of the ball is classed as criminal in English football and that is the reason England are light years behind. Flair is not acceptable unless its 100% certain they won't lose the ball. The reason why Stones and Ross are not playing and England adopt a non winning conservative way. Still doesn't answer why Wilshire and Alli are allowed to concede possession time after time.

He's in the squad in case of injuries imo. I reckon Roy thinks if Delle Ali and Rooney got injured or needed resting and they needed a driving attacking midfielder then he's the next best thing. If they'd have beaten Russia in the first game and hadn't needed something from Slovakia I reckon he probably would've started. Watch Italy use their squad to full effect next match as they've already won their group.

Personally I wouldn't swap Ross for any midfielder in the world, he has so much natural talent, he's a good hard working lad and he's one of us BUT all I've been trying to say is why he's not currently getting picked for England.

Wha??

All I can hope for with Barkley at the Euros is that he has a look around at players who are managing to get a game both for England and other teams who have nowhere near the ability that Barkley has and he cottons on that he could have anything he wants with a bit of application and some self belief. The tools are all there. The mentality doesnt seem to be.
