Ross Barkley

If anyone thinks Barkley put in a MOTM performance today, they have very low standards. Thats not to say he was horrible, but I thought he was part of a disappointing trio up front of Lukaku, Barkley and Bolaise. Mirallas was IMO the best of the attacking 4 by a wide margin today, and also put in a heavy shift pressing the ball and tracking back on defense. Barkley was right there for me with Rom in being a bit too lazy and then poor with the final ball. His strength continues to be his shooting, and half of his dribbling(the half where he doesnt fall down). His weakness continues to be decision making and creativity in a spot that needs it. From what it looks like right now, Koeman plans to let him grow into it.

Its a good thing one game doesnt make a season, or a career!

Very surprised at the heavy criticism.

Not far off having a handful of goals and assists, which appears to be the minimum requirement from a lot of fans. He gave it away at times, but what I liked was the effort he made after a mistake. At one point in the second half, he gave it away in his own half after being cornered by three of them, but then turned and pressed the ball all the way back to the keeper. No harm done at all.

He's improving under this management, and from a pretty sound base. But it's all just opinions, I guess.

Thing is a lot of Kev's best moments like the shot that was saved and his cross for Williams involved Ross creating space for him first. Also think it's time to lose the lazy talk. Ross put a shift in and looked out of gas coming off and Rom pressed more today than in 3 seasons. The only thing that is lazy are the people who keep saying that about our players

His decision making was bad yesterday. It took him ages to decide whether to pass or have a shot. For instance, when Crouch cleared the ball off the line, he should have a first time shot but he took the ball down and dribbled with the ball and the attacking play ended when 2 or 3 Stoke players had time to recover. And he loves to pass the ball into a crowd of Stoke players inside the penalty area instead of having a shot or distributing the ball to the wing.

Not having a go at him at all because Barkley is a talent but he has to be decisive to upper his game.

At the kick off he was out of the blocks like Usain Bolt, chasing them down, says alot to me.

Stoke are very hard to break down and will stand off and expect you to have to do something special to break their lines, and with the amount of chances we created, thats a great sign for us this season.

Dunno what game this fella was watching, but in no way was Barkley MoM

Who would have impressed Sam Allardyce?
England manager Sam Allardyce was at Goodison Park and is set to name his first squad since replacing Roy Hodgson for the World Cup qualifier in Slovakia on 4 September.

Allardyce would have been hugely impressed with Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who produced a man-of-the-match performance.

To me I thought we ripped them apart at times first half and Ross was central to that. Not MOTM but if a few shots would've been fired off quicker everyone would've said how much he created.

I had a quick look on a Stoke forum last night just to get their take on yesterdays game. Amongst the usual rose tinted comments were the odd posts from reasonable fans who admitted they were deservedly beaten by a superior team, and that we are lucky to have players of the quality of Rom and Ross in our squad. They clearly thought that Ross and Rom were our best players on the day with Ross described as "outstanding" and Rom as "unplayable"

Now my take from the match was that they both underperformed and that Holgate and Gueye were our stand out players.

My questions are: Do we rate our players performances based on our expectations of them?, and Do we unfairly expect Ross and Rom to deliver 10/10 performances every week just because we know they are capable?

Clearly the views of the countries press and indeed the opposing fans are completely different to our own fans.

Just putting it out there for comment an views.

I watched a recording of the game this morning and was interested to see if the criticism and praise of the players was what I saw. Barkley definitely getting both.

For me Barkley was good. He missed some passes but was involved he whole game, didn't go missing and made some key passes along the way. Him and Holgate were the 2 best players in the first half. 2nd half Gueye stepped up more but I would still say Barkley was top 4 2nd half.. With maybe Holgate, Gueye and Williams doing marginally more for the team.
