We defo cant say to clubs: "here he is, loads of experience, bags of talent, England international - that'll be £50M thanks". They smell blood in the water and the bargain of this summer. All thanks to the chuckleheads who allowed it to happen.
What we can do in terms of being constructive is to go for the player swap route. As you say, Smalling at United - fine with that. Certainly better than HMS Williams taking 15 minutes to turn 180 degrees.
That or, as said, the unwanted Kenedy at Chelsea plus £20M.
