I've always backed the other home nations + Ireland in major tournaments

Seems a bit sad that they can't do the same for England

Football is all about rivalry though. It's a major part of making the game what it is.

I find it quite odd that England fans (or any other of the nations) get so weird about it.

I guess I don't see the other home nations and Ireland as rivals really

I have respect and appreciation for them and want them to do well

I think a lot of England fans are similar

For instance, I remember listening to Talk Sport occasionally during Euro 2016 and the English commentators would often treat a Welsh or Irish goal like an England one and celebrate it practically the same. Stan Collymoore in particular

I'd agree with this totally.

Wales apart, I like to see the others doing well. But they despise us. Which is of course fair enough. But nah, not overly arsed by them.

And that's fair enough, I have just found it a bit strange that there is always a perceived neediness to be loved by England. Supporting another of the home nations that is not yours for me is along the lines of supporting an English team in the Champions League or something. It's kind of (slightly...) understandable but also feels a bit odd as its not your team.

The Talksport commentators would have to do that anyway as they broadcast all over the UK. Their listener base is British not purely English, same with the rest of the media.

I get the respect and appreciation part but people have that for loads of other nations teams too.

I don't technically "have" a nation though so maybe I don't get it as I don't support any national team and tend to just want the ones I like at that time to do well.

I used to support the other home nations when i was much younger. I can't exactly recall when that changed (1978 maybe) but it was basically the realisation over time that although England fans were actively encouraged by the media to support to the other home nations (particularly when England failed to qualify) they still hated us.

Anyone that supports a nation that hates them in return has a screw loose.

I don't and wouldn't expect them to support England but to go on an English teams forum & slag off the national team is a bit sad.

Is that really bad language? What if i were talking about the waste from coal mines? What word should i use then?

800 years of history mate sadly. What I find amusing is, a lot of them dont even know why they dont or wont support us.

I'm Irish, a huge part of me not wanting England to succeed in previous tournaments was the English media arrogance, and John Terry....

I find this England team quiet likeable, and am a big Harry Kane fan, could be the best striker in the world....

Hope ye beat Sweden, am enjoying all these 'It's Coming home' jokes doing the rounds.... Honestly though can't see ye winning the tournament, just because of your backline and lack of creativity in midfield....

Good summing up that N.S.N.O. However, you missed out that we struggle to score in open play. We've got a good goalie though.lol

They despise us so much yet they support an English team. That's what is dead weird about it.

Nobody really backs teams close to your own in football so don't know why the other home nations should back England.

I always want Everton players in the sides of the other home nations do well though. And despite being English, I almost cheered when Sheedy robbed the odious Steve eff off McMahon to score at Italia 90.

I am from Northern Ireland and have been to both Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland games, even been to a few away games and I don't hate the England Football Team. They are just another foreign team to me.
I have watched their games in this World Cup apart from Panama game. They are doing fine, won the games they should win and lost to Belgium who are a better team.
I do dislike the hype that goes on around the team, I also dislike the nonsense that commentators and journalists spout. Take the last game when it cut up rough, I seen two teams kicking each other and worse but if you look at the reporting it would appear there was only one side kicking. Now I have nothing against a team standing up for themselves, in fact I think it is a good trait, unfortunately Everton didn't do enough of it over the past years, but please see what is happening.
The reporting may be as sycophantic in other countries, I don't know. It is a factor in people from Ireland, both North and South, Scotland and Wales disliking England.

I always support the other UK teams in their games, unless its against England. Also support Republic of Ireland (my great, great grandad came from Cork). My son-in-law is Scottish so I have a sly grin if they lose!
