Equally there's no guarantee the knock outs produce a good game. I'd argue they often spiral into negativity and fear of making errors. Especially when Southgate, G. is involved.

Aside from that jibe at poor much maligned Gareth, its true. There's tons of Euros and world cup games where caution rules. Or duff teams grind through.

Every chance the knockouts get grimly defensive. France and Portugal, come on down. It's why you want a small safety net but plenty of jeopardy in the groups. But what we get now is no jeopardy and hammocks for each player.

I wouldn't mind experimenting with formats that benefitted the game and/or smaller nations. But the truth is UEFA use all that lovely stuff as a fig leaf to smuggle even more money out of people...and dilute the product by widening it in the process. Something's got to give in that scenario, and we will see as much in 2026...

Yeah, it's a tough one. The Nations league, in theory, should ameliorate the need for a larger Euros. Instead, there's just more games. And as you say, a bigger cash cow.
