A brilliant day at ST James, fantastic atmosphere and a real feeling that this is going to be a proper tournament. I had the same feeling about the Commonwealth games in Birmingham that when you put a sporting tournament in the UK, even if its a tournament that sometimes elsewhere struggles for public support, it seems to really get bought into and this will be the case with this world cup.

A bit of a shame Samoa didn't click but they will get better as they grow into the competition. England were brilliant from the first kick though. Welsby is great to watch and Dom Yound is a ludicrous athlete. Actually being at the game and seeing the whole picture you can also see how intelligent Sam Tompkins is in putting himself in the right places. I loved it today and if anyone gets a chance to get themselves to a game do it.

What do the NRL posters think of the lad?

Ive seen him playing for the Knights this season gone and he’s class. I can see him being one of the best players in the comp within the next couple of years. I hope the Eels go all out to grab him for 2024.
