Running 2022

I guess I have to allow time for his body to respond to training though, but I might have to sit high in the stands away from everyone else when I watch meets.
Typo fixed. I could also allow him to be a kid and grow up physically, mentally, and emotionally on his own, but once they're grown it seems late to impose your own excessive expectations on them so I'll try to pile these on now.

So where's the GOT Strava group?

I've kind of lost my motivation to go running at the moment, do need to get back out there

With the weather and the mud ( I only run off road ), I`ve been really forcing myself to go out, for what feels like weeks now.

I just try and keep my " base " miles ticking over in the Winter and don`t really start doing any long runs, until the weather starts warming up and the ground becomes a bit firmer.

It`s no fun, ploughing through the mud, in the wind and rain for a couple of hours.

I’m off to the Costa Blanca tomorrow until Monday so going to take my stuff to go for a run. Staying right opposite the beach so it’s a lovely run along the Torrevieja sea front and along the pier which goes out about a mile.

Looked out the window this morning and thought naaah!

Playing squash later though so feel justified for not going today.

I need to sort my knees out. Can't run on tarmac anymore, get killer shin splints/achilles tendonitis - comes on after about 1km and is excruciating.

Funny I play football on Wednesdays and Saturdays on grass and no trouble. Will need to sort it out soon, do miss going for a run, particularly in the summer months.

Get yourself a decent cushioned pair of off road shoes and try trail running ?

I can highly recommend Hoka Challengers - off road / road hybrid.

They can tackle most stuff, other than big mud.

The softer ground is less brutal on your legs / joints.

Good shout - reckon that could be an option, will look them up cheers.

Going to book in a physiotherapist session, too young to have ballsed my knees up already haha

Another vote for Hoka Challeger ATR , I use them for cross country , intervals around a field and they’re fine for short distances on road between house and field - all rounders with good cushioning.

A sunny but windy 10k race for me yesterday, with a target of going sub 50. It was hard work into the wind, lost time off the pace I needed, picked it up with the wind behind me and kept on pushing hard. Lost time on hill at 5 1/2 miles so it was real eye-balls out stuff over the last 1/2 mile and a sprint over the last 200 yards to finish in ……49:59sec ! Very pleased with my effort and a bonus was I was first in the M70 category.

Well done mate, for your age category, that’s fantastic stuff.

A lot of the decent trail races are starting to do earlier starts, for the older runners and the less fit, so no one should finish miles behind the field. Which I think is a really good idea.

try out some barefoot jogging before/after your football matches. any soft (and clean) surface will do, but since you're already there this make sense. any barefoot jogging will help but I like what I call buildups--start jogging and move quickly to near-sprint speed, then slow it back down. nothing strenuous, but just enough to put your legs through all the paces.

shin splints are frequently a precursor to stress fracture--not that you're necessarily about the find a break, but you're stressing your musculoskeletal in a way that overloads and you haven't yet adapted to it. I'd guess your tendonitis is a similar matter.

Also, get some new shoes. If you can run around in cleats/boots but your running shoes cause pain, they're probably not the right shoes for you.
