Running

Used to run with a bloke who loved a drink and one day, before a pretty tough trail race he took it too far and ended up 20 minutes late for the race still blindingly drunk stinking of Jack Daniel’s which then developed into the hangover from hell. Anyway, he made it round looking seconds from death, throwing up multiple times and without walking once in what is without a doubt the most impressive athletic performance I have ever seen

Sounds like most Tough Mudder events tbh 😂

The contrast with the girl at work who owns 3 pairs of trainers for different conditions (she only runs on road), counts her carbs the the decimal point, reads and follows every “groundbreaking” new study by [insert internet sensation sports scientist here] to the letter and 100% fakes a limp so everyone knows she’s been out running is incredible

Commonly known as the “ running wa***er “

Did my first ever road race today, the Brathay Langdale Half Marathon.

I wanted to do a road race, that was as similar to a trail race, with the elevation as possible and one that was in a really remote area.

For some reason, I’ve never been to the Langdale are of the Lakes before, it’s just stunning, but with some serious climbs.

Helped by the fact that once the mist lifted it was a beautiful day.

Most of my road races are like this, but a bit flatter, they're ok. Still find it a bit boring when there is just a long stretch

Looks great (he says from afar 😆). Good turnout too by the looks of it. So did it live upto expectation for being road? Totally put off by tarmac now!

This week I have entered staveley half marathon next may. Said I wouldn't go further than 10mile after doing Ambleside 23k... never learn.

Ran with the wife in a road marathon today, tough going running 2+ minutes per mile slower than I normally do.

It was a charity event - Brathay Trust and apparently is a big local event too, so there was 800 plus for the two distances ( half and full )

The “ roads “ were tiny single track fell roads and it had hammered down overnight, so with the flooding, it was probably as close to a trail race as you’d ever get on the road and I really enjoyed it - the scenery was breath taking.

I’ve done the Stavely ten miler and the course is quite a tricky one - a mix of trail and lowland fell. Plus, it starts with a whacking big incline at the start.

Stavely is a really small village, with very limited accommodation, so I don’t know what you’re plans are - I know some good places nearby if you’re struggling.

Which road marathon was it - the weather was a bit gnarly ?

Yes was hoping to do their 18k, as had to defer this year due to injury. They've removed that distance now, no Idea why introduced a half instead, so had not much choice other than enter it. Missus is doing the 10k

Cheers, however we booked the premier Inn Kendal first before we entered, good deal for couple nights, so we can take advantage of the direct train/bus and go the brewery afterwards :)

Abingdon in Oxfordshire... not as interesting or scenic as langdale and quite flat really. Didn't really feel it was as windy as the 40kph winds predicted, but rain on and off. Done with marathons now

Wind is the killer, it’s just a case of getting it over and done with.

Loads of stuff in Kendal - shops, places to eat etc, also the Inov8 factory shop is in Stavely, so if you want any running stuff, it’s a lot cheaper 👍

Well I’ve been out trail running the past few weeks , so a quick catch up. Last Saturday was a 10 k trail race on Speyside which literally went straight up for the first two miles, levelled off then came downhill to finish at the Cardhu whisky distillery. There were some stunning views and I don’t usually work too hard in these races , but this time there was another V70 just ahead of me after a 1/4 mile so I stuck with him , edged past him but couldn’t shake him off and at 3 miles he’d pulled away from me . From 5 miles I was catching him but couldn’t quite manage it and he finished about 20 secs ahead of me. We had a wee dram of Cardhu at the finish and a nice pair of Cardhu cufflinks for finishing 2nd V70 🙂
Cardhu is “ the home of Johnny Walker” , and the photos show the distillery and also their statue of “ the Johnny Walker striding man” and the first female distillery manager. At that time it was an illegal still so she took to waving a RedFlag to warn other illegal stills in the area when Custom and Excise men were out and aboot.

On Saturday I took part in the 1/2 Dramathon , again on Speyside and also involving distilleries. The start point was at Tamdhu distillery and followed the Speyside Way trail along the river Spey, past 3 or 4 distilleries and ended with the last four miles being a hard uphill climb to the finish at Glenfiddich Distillery . It was one of those glorious autumnal days with the sun sparkling on the Spey and leaves on the trees magnificent along the river. After 6 miles we came to a halt at a shoogly bridge where only 5 people at a time could cross. As it stopped my momentum I decided to ease off the pace, take some photos and eat some cake at the aid station. The Goody bag was generous , with four drams , a whisky glass and for some of us a nice T shirt which we got for donating last years entry fee after it was called off at the last minute.

Sounds like a cracking race, especially with that goody bag 😂

It’s an expensive race though as it involves buses to the various starts ! “ The Dramathon” actually has four races in it, The Full Dram of 26 miles, 1/2 Dram 13 miles, a 10k and a four stage team relay over the Full Dram route. It attracts people from all over the UK and Europe and sells out early every year. You should consider it , you’d enjoy the 1/2Dram, it’s a bit complex in terms of logistics though.

The furthest North I’ve ever been to run is Penrith 😂

I’d have great difficulty selling that package to my missus, as tempting as it is !
