Running

Sunday’s run of 2Easy miles +6 Marathon pace +1E+6 M +1 E was successful , just a bit over the M pace overall but hills and freezing winds meant I’m happy with the result. Then on Monday I developed a raging head cold and I’m still laid up with what it’s developed into . Fortunately this was always going to be a recovery week after 3 hard weeks so that helps , but I’ll be desperate to get out Friday and Sunday. I also planned to be two weeks ahead in my marathon plan to allow for colds/ COVID/ injuries / life etc so if I can ease back this week and get good mileage next week I’ll be back on track.

Mileage is starting to steadily increase now.
That’s a decent pace as you build up mileage. I remember you saying you were targeting 3:50 ish , I’m focusing on sub 4 so I’m starting to introduce “ marathon pace “ miles into my runs with some miles at 9 min/mile pace. Next week I’ll hopefully add in some long intervals at close to 8 min/ mile . My marathon is 2 weeks before Manchester so I’m ahead of you in terms of mileage.

I normally used to get colds during my taper week, which I put down to the fact that it was my body reacting to the relaxation of my training schedule.

A while ago I changed my taper weeks, to pretty much the same intensity, but quite a bit less mileage, which seems to have worked for me - no more colds pre race day ( so far )

40 years ago I used to get a lot of colds when I was training hard and shrug them off, I’ve been careful in my mileage build up but am inevitably a bit tired . I think the kicker was watching a Highland League game on Saturday afternoon in perishing winds which took the wind chill to -3, I was frozen all evening . Then a 16 miler Sunday in icy conditions……. It is what it is, just a tad annoying but not a major derailment.

Yeah was pretty happy, conditions were kind. Got my first half of my training this Saturday morning before the match but feeling okay atm all in all.

Managed to raise over £700 for Alzheimer's also so made up with that

It’s really hard mentally when you used to run decent times but have left it way too long.

You are basically starting again from scratch. Easy to give up when you are running below what you used to be able to.

Just need to try and mentally adjust and accept that was a long time ago.

My best time for a 5k was 21.54 but that was years ago, I’d never expect to get anywhere close again. If I can get back to 25 mins for 5k eventually which I last achieved 3 years ago I’d be chuffed to bits. Im competitive but only with myself.

Going to be a hard slog but let’s give this a crack and try and enjoy it.

Disregard those old PBs and think of your running now as a new phase and opportunity to set a load of new PBs

Eg post 30 years old PBs

Exactly this.

That was then, this is now.

First bout of Covid did a prooer number on my lungs and turned me from a front of the pack runner, to a back of the pack runner.

I enjoy it just as much, if not more now, as my only goal is to finish and enjoy the day.

Plus, I’ve made loads of friends at the back and never ever made any at the front 😂

It's all about cumulative effort. Get started and then keep it going.

I did write in my PBs on Strava... in part not to forget, in part to remind me what I can do/did. But also I ran those PBs when everyone called them PRs, and that's the hardest part :)
I must admit I put my PBs on my Strava 18 months ago . They’re from 35years - 42 years ago , it was partly a vanity thing , nobody is really interested , but those who’ve looked now see me in a different light than the shuffling old guy at the back in training 🙂.
I have goals this year to lower my V70s PBs in 5k, 10k , 10 mile, 1/2 m and marathon . I’ll be very happy if I get 3 of them!!
