‘Prince Bandar threatens Putin with Chechen terror attacks’

"Monday's terrorist bombings only 400 miles (640 kilometers) away from the site of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, have a geopolitical back story involving implied threats from Saudi Arabia's intelligence chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan to Russian President Vladimir Putin last summer when Bandar was pressing Putin to withdraw his backing for the Syrian government.
According to a diplomatic leak detailing the Bandar-Putin meeting in Moscow on July 31, Bandar suggested that Putin's agreement to abandon the government of Bashar al-Assad would lead Saudi Arabia to restrain its Chechen terrorist clients who have been attacking Russia targets for years. Putin reportedly grew furious, interpreting Bandar's offer as a warning that the Sochi games would be threatened by terrorism if Putin didn't comply, according to opednews.com website.

At the time, Putin warned Saudi Arabia of potentially severe consequences -- suggesting military retaliation -- if Bandar's implied warning was followed up by actual terrorist attacks like the ones in Volvograd on Monday, killing more than 30 people, the report said.

Putin has staked much of his prestige on a successful Olympics in Sochi, and he also would risk losing face if it were perceived that Bandar had executed a terrorist plan to disrupt the Winter Olympics and that Putin was powerless to stop it.

According to the leaked diplomatic account of last summer's meeting, Bandar sought Russia's cooperation on several Mideast concerns, including Syria, and told Putin, "I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics in the city of Sochi on the Black Sea next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us."

Putin reportedly responded, "We know that you have supported the Chechen terrorist groups for a decade. And that support, which you have frankly talked about just now, is completely incompatible with the common objectives of fighting global terrorism that you mentioned. We are interested in developing friendly relations according to clear and strong principles."

It's the problem with Isis now, over whom the Saudis have no control.

Indeed the Saudi's have their own problems dealing with the threat of IS. Al Baghdadi said the kufr House of Saud was for the chop about a year ago. Taking Mecca and Medina is deffo on their shortlist. It's an obvious geopolitical target as well as a symbolic one.

It's also vulnerable due to its already radicalised Wahhabi population pumped up with sectarian bollox fed them by their own government in an attempt to ward off any real reform. This is a weakness neither Syria nor Iraq had. IS had to work for years to inflate intersect strife. IS's main objective is fundamentally different from the Al Qaeda threats the KSA has historically dealt with, its plan is to stir up inter-Muslim hatred and there's plenty of that in the kingdom already.

The Russians have been on high alert for years due to the situation in Chechnya. Chechen fighters in Syria are still financed by the Saudis and they are the ones that will come back and fight against Putin. This situation now is nothing new for Putin. The Russian/Iranian/Hezbollah success against those fighting the Assad government - since the Syrian Free Army merged with others this past 18 months - has called the US/UK bluff about fighting against ISIS.

The US/UK are spinning a great yarn that 'Russia has antagonised ISIS (those fighting against Assad), so they better watch out' (Putin's war on terror will backfire - being the headlines). In other words, they should do what they have done against those opposing the Syrian government because they will attack Russia. Odd really, that they were not saying that when the US were bombing ISIS.

I think Vlad would welcome any excuse to send the tanks and artillery back to Grozny - Bring it on you bearded devils!

I don't recall the UK/USA saying the Russians antagonised ISIS. It's not as if they need antagonisng to be honest.

Headlines, 'The Russians will pay a high price for their involvement in Syria'.

“Fighting Isil without pursuing a parallel political transition only risks escalating the civil war in Syria and with it the very extremism and instability that Moscow claims to be concerned about and aspire to fighting,” Mr Carter added. “That approach is tantamount . . . to pouring gasoline on the fire.”

I think the west is more concerned that Russia's direct military intervention in support of Assad will lead to a situation whereby the more moderate rebel groups in Syria (those funded by Team Barry) start to build closer ties with AQ affiliated groups like JaN or Ahrar al-Sham, as they battle against Vlad's orthodox crusader army.

Western credibility among the wider Syrian opposition will continue to be further eroded, and the Gulf States and Turkey will take matters further into their own hands.

Western influence in Syria has surely reached an all-time low.

Four Years Later, The Free Syrian Army Has Collapsed

“There is no such thing as the Free Syrian Army,” said Rami Jarrah, a prominent Syrian activist and co-founder of ANA Press, a Syrian news outlet. “People still use the term in Syria to make it seem like the rebels have some sort of structure. But there really isn’t.”

The moderate movement in Syria could be considered officially dead as of last week, when the last U.S.-backed rebel faction, Harakat Hazzm, disbanded, its members joining extremist groups such as the Nusra Front, the al Qaeda offshoot in the country. Some of the men joined a group called the Levant Front, a coalition of rebel militias that also has ties to al Qaeda.

“I think within three months or so the Levant Front will officially become a part of al-Nusra,” Jarrah said. “And I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing. The group’s relationship with al Qaeda is just a media one. The two groups don’t talk to each other.”

The Nusra Front, aka Jabhat al-Nusra, has picked up thousands of men who once fought under the umbrella of the FSA during the past three years. It offers its soldiers hundreds of dollars a month in salary and food installments. The soldiers in the FSA did not receive any monthly stipend. When extremist groups such as the Nusra Front gained ground in Syria and received millions of dollars in cash and weapons from wealthy businessmen in the Gulf states and Libya, the moderate rebels “had no other choice,” Jarrah said. “They feel like they are cheated, so they join ISIS.”

The SFA not only provide fighters but weapons to ISIS and have been doing it for the last 18 months. The US attempted to train an army inside Syria, think it was 14 at the last count.

I rest my case
