Airspace violations happen all the time; almost no-one shoots first any more. As for why Ankara is deeply unhappy, given who they have been supporting - and who they have been bombing - we should really be deeply unhappy at them.

No they don't. Russia certainly pushes it as close as possible but does not violate the airspace of western powers. They do it on a regular basis with the Turks however. I pointed out a month or two ago that Turkey is no one's patsy and that they would eventually do this........they were warned by Turkey and NATO.....maybe now Putin will take note....

er - Turkish warplanes breached Greek airspace more than two thousand times last year, without any of them being shot down. Even if you accept their version of events, this aircraft breached Turkish airspace a tiny amount and was actually hit whilst it was over Syria - it is utterly unjustifiable.

As for "Turkey is no one's patsy", you are right - we urgently need to work out whose side they (or more correctly, Erdogan and his mob) are on because there is abundant evidence that it is not ours. Our response to this shoot-down should be framed accordingly.

the Yanks respond:

White House: 'Russian incursion into Turkish airspace lasted seconds'
Russia’s operation in Syria will continue despite the downing of a Russian fighter jet by the Turkish air force, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said. Meanwhile, a US official has said that initial indications are that the Russian incursion into Turkish airspace lasted a matter of seconds.

Meanwhile the Turks are claiming the two airmen are still alive and that they are working to get them off the Syrian rebel groups who are holding them; no doubt the box of humble pie mix is being opened right now.

Turkey deffo has its own agenda here. They need to brought into line quickly or GTFO NATO.

...and Russian subs apparently off the Scottish coast, brinksmanship and diplomacy now in action but it's a dangerous game being played.
Just as long as hey arent stupid enough to come ashore in Glasgow.
Not after the last time we got 'invaded'

The Russians were bombing the Turkmen Militia, the Turkmen are anti Bashir, as is Turkey. A jet flying that close to the border, given the speed, could be in and out of Turkish airspace in seconds. Turkey is playing a dangerous game.
There is no concerted approach to Syria, even among the allied forces, they each have their own agenda. Britian getting involved in flying missions over Syria is madness.
