A forward is supposed to score goals. I don't know any major international side that doesn't employ forwards to score goals.

Heskey does have strengths, but they are not International class and are not what we need. We need a mobile strike force, a pacey strike force.

Rooney isn't an out and out. Defoe is. Rooney will not break free of the last defender, Defoe will.

So if the argument for Heskey is strong, then it shouldn't be at the expense of Defoe, it should be for Rooney, but nobody is going to advocate for that kind of madness are they?

But the system then changes if you bring Defoe in for heskey and let Rooney do the donkey work, you changing the team to accomadate Defoe and taking a lot away from rooney.

Rooneys strike rate as a loan striker for England is suberb and he knows how to play with heskey.

I'm not saying playing Defoe wouldn't work, but capello has built a system that would change if he didn't play a target man. I like Defoe, always thought he could be a replacement for owen. But Rooney has been lethal for England as a striker under capello, Defoe has made an impact as a sub.

Its all about Defoe replacing Rooney IMO and whether capello would stick Rooney in the heskey role. I think capello would do that as a plan b not plan a, which has been pretty solid so far.

The national teams problem is not scoring goals to be fair it's the midfield and what works when players aren't fit or are fit.

I never understand why a lot of England manager feel they have to go with a big man to play with Rooney. Rooney is strong enough up there on his own to do that job. Defoe will score goals, Heskey will fall over a lot and bump into people. I know which one i would prefer in my team. :D

That was my first WC too. couldn't agree more. At the time I didn't realise it was winter there and wondered why they were wearing long sleeves. Argentina were boss but the Italian team was great too with Zoff, Antognoni, Causio, Bettega, Gentile and a young Paolo Rossi. enduring memories.
Check out the guardian unlimited section 'the joy of six'. Looks at great volleys and includes that amazing Hans Krankl goal against W. Germany.

Mine too, sadly don't remember much apart from being sent to bed early during the argentina holland game for having the audacity to ask my dad why the players in the wall were holding their nuts.

pretty harsh I thought

Personally I feel Crouch has been hard done by.
The guy scores goals, but noone seems to give him any reward.

And before anyone says he's crap, he isn't.

System is bollocks. See my previous post.

Its worked so far and we've scored lots of goals.

The English national team doesnt have technically gifted players throughout the team to turn it into the Spanish side, so you've got to play to your strenghts.

I hope he does give Defoe a run about. But if he starts against Croatia I can see him being marked out of the game and not doing anything while he gets bullied off the ball before being subbed.
