Eh?? Would United sign Leighton Baines or Ben Davies given the choice of the two?

You say it's a poor argument, but there is absolutely nothing to support yours that Baines is one of the best left backs in the league. He is not, everyone can see it. Baines is finished. I've been a massive long time fan of him as you probably know, but he is finished and that's that.
Football is a business and re-sale value is a huge consideration.
Baines is Everton's only LB and would command a considerable fee. Factor in as you say he's 33 and he becomes poor business sense.
If Davies was good as you say, at 25 (I think), why haven't some of the bigger clubs tempted Spurs (publically)?
I'd imagine it's because he's not that good.
Purely imo of course.

Because we've had to swat away aaaaaaaaaaaaaaall this interest in Baines...? Other than from Moyes himself when he went to United we've not received a bid for him in forever, what a coincidence?

I am/was a big fan of the guy, but he's been finished for a good (or bad?) part of 3 years tbh.

The simile you're looking for to keep the explanation clean is that having Koeman as manager was like having a nark for a neighbour who didn't mend fences and was a general drag on your quality of life, only to sell up and be replaced by a more affable neighbour but one who you daren't leave your stuff lying about the garden because they'll jump over and nick them.
Find my self whole heartedly agreeing. Although I think Sam has surrounded himself with a decent coaching set up, and it's almost a shame it will be dismantled when Fonseca or Simeone comes in next summer.
