Transfer Rumour Sami Khedira

I think Delph wants first team football and even when he’s got he knows he’s not getting it here. Any sort of decent fee covers his book value and gets his wages off the books giving us more room to manoeuvre around the regulations. There were rumours of Burnely being interested and with their new investment maybe they’ll make an offer too good to turn down.

Ive no doubt Khedira would be class on the ball but I can’t see a competitive midfield three that includes him and James. If we went into a derby with that midfield we’d be run off the pitch. In my opinion every player in the team has to be quick with the exception of James at number 10 as his quality is too big to ignore. We can carry one slow player but if we add more than that then the gaps start to open up and we can’t retrieve the ball off the opposition as we saw in the first 20 minutes of the cup game against United when we could barely get a sniff.

I think Delph is actually an ok number 6. If you ask him to do much else he struggles but he's ok there. The big issue is his fitness. Unlike a James, who is class when he plays, he's only ok when he plays, so we can't afford him to miss games as he does. I'd be delighted with any fee, as I wiuld be for Bernard too and indeed Tosun.

As for Khedira, I think the question becomes, have you got a manager who knows how to manage older players, and one who is tactically adept enough to "cover" those players and make the system work. For me it's an overwhelming yes. I've seen great Italy and Spain teams, filled with 4 or 5 lads who can't run outplay England teams with far more mobility.

You really don't need enormous mobility to play in a 6 position. It's about positioning and reading of the game. We are seeing that with Davies, who has decent legs, but his weakness is his reading of the game. To a degree Doucoure to.

I would personally avoid binary conclusions such as we can't win with Khedira and James in the same 11. It's not to say it's ideal or without challenges but I think it wouldlift the level of the squad. If we got a James clone to play, he would play and we would be better. Godfrey, Holgate, Doucoure, Richarlinson, DCL etc are all good athletes. So is DIgne.

As for United, they are the in form team in the league. We didn't just get run over, we got outplayed. Had we have had a calmer head in the team, who could use the ball better from the 6 position it would have helped us. It's unlikely we would outrun a Liverpool, or a United. We would need a different way to defeat them.

Is Khedira potentially a big upgrade on what we have? Yes. Will it present problems having 2 slower lads? Yes. Have we got a tactically flexible manager who can find solutions? Again yes. Is it a relativdly low risk, short termoption to allow us to get Gbamin and to a degree Allan fit? Yes.

We definitely need something else in the forward line though, to help get the best out of Rich (by stopping teams doubling up) and also just give us some tactical flexibility. Dom is also, clearly, run into the ground at the moment, as was obvious he would be when we let Kean go and didn't get anyone else in.

It really, really annoyed me what the recruitment/management team did at the end of the last window.

Deciding that, in this season of all seasons, it was a good idea to have your rotation option for up front also be your first choice wide left player (who then went and got suspended, but could just as easily picked up an injury or contracted covid) was simply baffling and reflects very badly on the people who made the call.

Yes agree with all of that. I think the plan ws for Richarlinson to play centrally more and give Dom a break. Iwobi has become a good option for us that should allow this more. I'd like to see Isco coming in who could play off the left.

You are right though, we need to fire a bit more offensively.

Again though mate, there's no pace with Isco off the left, and his best games have come as a midfielder - which is his position.

You need pace and power in this league. Physicality. We don't have enough of it at the moment outside of a select few players.

Look at the league's three best playmakers - Grealish, Fernandes and De Bruyne (that's in order of chances created this season and then also in 2020 as a whole, it's KDB, Grealish, Fernandes).

All of them get about the pitch. Grealish had the most yards for ball carries in the league in 2020. De Bruyne and Fernandes more about passing/crossing, though both have that power to move quickly off the ball. We severely lack that from midfield, so rely on Richarlison to do it for us.

If he has an off day, which he has been doing lately, then we're relying on James (when he's been fit) to unlock the defence or just one moment of quality.

If we want to push on we need a player with more dynamism.

Grealish, Fernandes, KDB - those players aren't ten-a-penny. Szoboszlai who has just gone to Leipzig is definitely in that Grealish mould.

The likes of Bailey, Zaha - those pacy, powerful forwards - would at least relieve the pressure on Richarlison and Dom and give us another option to carry the ball, which is what we severely lack at the moment. Bailey often drops deep for Leverkusen off either flank, picks up the ball and runs with it. He seems to have beefed up a bit this season and that's helped him become more of a powerful runner - whereas before he played a lot like Sterling, looking to play off the shoulder.

I think Khedira coming in pushes Allan up the pitch to become more box to box, which I really like.
In a few games, Allan showed he can carry the ball and drive forward with his good dribbling.

Khedira
Doucoure Allan
James

That shape has a good balance to it of experience, creativity, power and passing.

Plus we have depth of

Gbamin/Delph
Davies Gomes
Siggurdsson

Just need a pacey RW to balance with Richie on the left.
