People can point to Vlasic / Onyekuru / Lookman who barely played but at least we still made profit on all of them. Ultimately I feel those sort of low wages signings is where we should have been focusing, and the fact that none of them seemed to gel yet went onto bigger and better things should have set the alarm bells ringing.

Signing rejects from better clubs - Schneiderlin, Iwobi, Walcott for over £20m each (and especially selling Schneiderlin for less than 1/10th of that) is where a lot of the damage has been done.

Then we've gone and bought players from worse clubs than us at literally the worst possible time - Gylfi, Williams, Bolasie - all 27+ when we signed them and allowed their respective clubs to cash in.

Michael Keane a bit younger than them but had a year left on his contract and reminds me of MOTD/Danny Murphy bigging up Roger Johnson under Alex McLeish's Birmingham - an extremely limited player in a team that couldn't be more set up to adhere to his strengths that every sensible club swerved.

Few punts in there like Sandro that didn't hit but we massively overpaid on wages on to secure which kind of takes away the entire point of a punt.

Bought two fullbacks in January that have very good potential on Football Manager but miles off first team status at a time where we were crying out for immediate quality.

I could go on but it's absolutely depressingly terrible business all round.

2017/18 was a killer. Look at the long list of absolute dross that was brought in then. You can only really make a case for Pickford being the only good signing out of the lot.
My thoughts exactly. 2019/2020 was a stinker too!

17/18 really was our chance

We had Europa, chelsea and Arsenal were about to have bad seasons, no Wolves, Villa or Leeds, Leicester and Wham were bad

If we had spent that money well....

Oh well, can't do anything but sit back and wonder what may have been

We took the wrong approach. We tried to do it all in that season and signed aging players. We needed to invest for sustainability and didn't. Still haven't. It was never going to work.
