Scotch eggs

Try a decent butcher. You'll get good quality scotch eggs. It's sausage meat coated in breadcrumbs with an egg in the middle. Sometimes you get variations - black pudding added in or chill etc. The co-op ones aren't a great starting point.

Edit: you can et hot or cold.

There's some incredible posh ones at Waitrose deli.. (I dont shop there. Mother in law works there and brings lots of freebies round for us)

I used to get superb ones from a butcher on Whiteladies Road in Bristol at a lunchtime, when working up there. It is turbo-poshoville up there, but the food shops were great. I'd be eating porridge the rest of the month though. It was worth it.

Pal of mine took a packed lunch on board a Hibs bus travelling to an away match circa 1975.

In it was a scotch egg in a brown paper bag home-made by his mum.

He put it in the overhead where it was found later by one of the rougher element of the company.

Some guy's s***** in a bag, came the cry whereupon it was launched out the window at a passing Rangers bus going in the opposite direction.

I'm a big fan of scotch eggs, Sainsburys Taste the difference are the best supermarket ones in my very humble opinion ( other supermarkets are available)
As you suggested the odd decent butcher will sell a good one.
Must admit I prefer mine cold with Heinz salad cream or HP sauce all over them.
