Marco Silva talks up Everton's leaders after revealing THREE captains for the season
Seamus Coleman was given the armband for last weekend's game with Southampton ahead of usual vice-captain Leighton Baines
Everton now have THREE captains, Marco Silva has confirmed.
Seamus Coleman was given the armband for last weekend's game with Southampton ahead of usual vice-captain Leighton Baines.
Phil Jagielka, the long-serving club captain, missed the game at Goodison through suspension.
But Silva has confirmed that there hasn't been a demotion for Baines but that the squad now has three skippers and that he will pass the armband around as he sees fit.
Asked why Coleman had been given the Everton captaincy, Silva said: “To be clear, we have three captains.
“We have Jags, we have Leighton and we have Coleman as well.
“In that moment I decided to give the captaincy to Coleman, it was his 200th Premier League start and it was something I wanted to give to him, it is nothing to do with Leighton or whatever, it was something I decided in that moment.”
Silva added: “Everybody knows they are our captains and in that moment I spoke with them, the last person to know was Seamus because I wanted to give him that small gift because he deserved it.
“He was happy. It is something for him to be proud of, for sure.”
New Arsenal boss Unai Emery has named five captains this season with Laurent Koscielny remaining as club skipper and supported by Petr Cech, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka.
