2021/22 Seamus Coleman

It wasn't just his positioning and getting skinned that was awful on Monday. His distribution was absolutely awful. 2 of the goals came from him just giving the ball away so cheaply.

He shouldn't be anywhere near the 1st team after that performance alone, same as Keane and Holgate, but unfortunately we all know they'll still be getting minutes in the upcoming games and remaining fixtures.

Players lose pace when they get older and that's the cause of a lot of mistakes. He's still nowhere near the pinnacle of blame for where we are this season though. That is almost completely down to a CB crisis where we have way below average players apart from the long term absentee Mina...and he's only just about above decent.

None of this is Coleman's fault. He isn't to blame for the club attempting to end their long search for his replacement by buying a dud from an ale house league.

And, overall, a player like this who's given such fantastic service in the long period he's been with us deserves only praise - not the type of attacks on him we see in this thread. It's shameful. He gets a free pass until the day he hangs his boots up from me.

You're correct. Coleman isn't too blame, but that doesn't mean, but his individual performances have caused losses on more than occasion. It's not his fault he's being picked, but teams are evidently starting to target him.

How can a team begin to yield confidence when you are so unconfident about your own defence?

We're in a real situation regarding our defence, there appears to be no solid answer to sorting it.

I am awfully fearful of the months ahead

Yep, and the absolute disaster that is our defence will wash off on our other players as well, for example our attacking players will go into games thinking they'll need to score multiple goals to get anything from the game at all, which will kill their confidence before a ball is even kicked.

Imagine the manager telling the players the tactic is to soak up pressure and try to nick it late on, but you know that none of the defenders he's chosen will be able to carry it out.

Or imagine sitting in the dressing room for a home game knowing the defence is made up of Kenny Coleman Keane and Holgate, then hearing the anxiety from the fans every time the ball goes near one of them. As a striker you'll have the added pressure of needing to put the ball in the net 2/3/4 times just to take a point against crap opposition because you know those clowns in defence are going to gift a few goals away, so you'll be trying too hard instead of just doing what should come naturally to you when you're facing the goalkeeper.

Lampard needs to set the team up frst and foremost to defend. I think that's the key to using all the back four he likes to choose. They've done well for him against City and that's the way we need to start every single game now to give ourselves a foothold in games and build a platform for taking points.

Agree with you that Coleman has looked finished, it’s a shame he’s been allowed to go on this long as first choice right back. Club’s fault.

Re the defence, it’s terrible but setting up with a good shape to the midfield three would help them a lot. Against Spurs and Southampton they were so exposed. Midfield against Spurs had no shape, offered no protection, got caught ahead of the ball constantly and didn’t pressure to try to win back quickly or retreat and get get back into shape behind the ball when we lost it. A good defence would struggle the way our midfield plays and a bad defence, we’ll it exposes them and makes them even worse.

Last 5 seasons and only 3 goals in the prem

Cash has scored 3 goals for villa this season alone

Coleman needs binning
I know there is alot of sentiment on here but he cant cut it at this level for a full game, I as at the City game and he was targeted as the weak link the last 30 minutes When he played a decent game, my mate said the same and he watched on the box. His touch and control of the ball is always on the stretch or just enough. I seen the same happen to Jags towards the end but to a lesser extent. Patterson maybe this or that but I think if we blood him now he won’t forget this season in a hurry and it will make him a player. We’ve also got Kenny to fill in who I think will do a a good enough job. Coleman would do ok in a game with 25 left to see it out with tired legs and would probably look much better and experience could see games out so he wouldn’t be completely erased and could be very useful but he’s been overplayed and he cant do it for 90. I’m sorry if I’ve offended anyone.
