Is it? He was never able to cross well and consistently so when he started losing his pace - it was all going downhill. Defensively average, and these last 4 games have been setup so we have essentially no attacking threat down his side, as if he leaves it open that's that as he can't get up and down as he used to.

Or are you saying that when he got bullied by Shane Long you thought he's still got a lot to give?
As a person and Evertonian - no doubt, great.
As a player - biggest "meh" since Phil Neville currently.

People need to get out of 2012-2017 when he was good.

I really don't think he has been consistently awful for the past 5 years, some of that obviously coming back from a long-term injury.

It is not about living in the past. The question that we have to ask is, has he let the team down while Patterson has been out, the answer is a firm no, he hasn't. Therefore, I believe it is wrong to completely write him off.

He hasn't, no, I'm not mentally handicapped to say he has - but a swallow doesn't make a summer and whatnot.

How long before he does is not an unreasonable question to ask imo.
To be fair, you said he was a great person so, regardless of whether he played for us or not it might very well be excellent to have him around in some sort of capacity.
Eh it was a tongue in cheek comment. lol
Think he'd be a good fit as a role model, obviously can't say anything about actual coaching ability like, but he seems a good pro, so no doubt also good enough.

What I'm saying is the claim that he's mediocre at best is rubbish.
To say he's mediocre at best implies that he's never good, and occasionally adequate.
I'm not going to argue that he's Cafu but overall he is a very good footballer.
You can argue that the likes of Long had the beating of him but also that he's had the better of Zaha on nearly every occasion over the last 10 years.
True, he cant cross, he never could, even at Sligo and his throw ins frustrate me (that's more a coaching issue, not a player one).
But he's a player who at 34 and after a serious injury, knows his limits and what he's capable of. (hence taking the ball to the byline and cutting back rather than lofting a cross in).
He's a very good defender,
he's a very good game manager,
he's good at link up play when the right players are around him.
He's been good through countless managerial changes and player changes in front of him and beside him. Think of some of the dross he's had to mop up for.
He's also a very good on field captain.

He swings between mediocre and excellent. (very occasionally poor)
So to say he's mediocre at best is rubbish.
He's excellent at best.

I honestly cant believe the stick he gets.
